DOVER-FOXCROFT – Herbert Nelson Grant, 93, loving husband of Jane Washburn Grant and father of nine, passed away Jan. 29, 2012, surrounded by his family at his home. He was born Dec. 29, 1918, in Garland, the son of Ray and Lizzie (Burgess) Grant.
He was a World War II veteran serving in the Army and was released from service to manage his father’s farm. He met his wife, Jane, in the potato fields as he drove his tractor where she was picking potatoes. They were married Dec. 16, 1944. After their first son was born, they bought their own farm and turned it from an empty dark house with an old-fashioned three-holer to a busy farm complete with electricity and new fangled indoor plumbing. They celebrated 67 years of marriage with their family on Dec. 16.
He is survived by his wife, Jane; eight sons and their wives, Bruce and Nancy, Richard and Nancy, Ted and Susan, Ken and Susan, Scott and Kerry, Mark and Vicki, Gary and Jackie, Jeff and Janet and their daughter, Julie Knowlton; 30 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren and counting.
A celebration of Herb’s life will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, at Dover-Foxcroft Congregational Church, West Main Street. A luncheon will be in the fellowship hall at the church.
