INDIAN ISLAND, Maine — A local man was taken into custody Tuesday morning after a predawn standoff at his home, according to police.

Maine State Police tactical and negotiations teams went to the home of Charles Attean, 31, in the wake of a domestic incident at his home, public safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said in a news release.

The tactical teams were sent to the scene at the request of Indian Island police after it was discovered Attean had a weapon, Indian Island Police Chief Robert Bryant said Tuesday afternoon.

Attean had used the weapon, a handgun, to threaten his live-in girlfriend, Bryant said.

“There was a weapon. That’s why the state police were asked to assist us,” said Bryant, adding that officers recovered the weapon when the home was searched.

After authorities tried to negotiate with Attean by telephone and a public address system, he attempted to run out his back door and was quickly taken into custody, according to police.

Attean was then released to Indian Island authorities, who transported him to the Penobscot County Jail, Bryant said. He is facing a charge of domestic assault. The woman was not seriously hurt.

    1. I guess you don’t want the Indian Game Wardens to help rescue people when they get lost on state land?  Seriously, you apparently don’t understand what you are talking about.  Spare the rest of us of your racist non sense.

      1. Nothing racist, I just remember very fondly the last time the State Police were on Indian Island and they threw a huge hissey fit.  I don’t agree with it.  IMO you can’t have your cake and eat it too.

        1. Don’t let a few Bad Apples sway your opinion of natives.  I grew up in Old Town and some of the nicest people I knew in school were Natives. Always treated with respect when I go to church over on the Island as well.

        2. Apples and oranges. In the instance to which you refer, the state police were not requested. The state police didnt follow ptoper protocol. Normal practice is for the police to notify the receiving town. Local police don’t appreciate being surprised by state police. Indian Island is no different….

    2. sigh, let the ignorant (and most likely, racist) remarks begin, as is what usually happens when an Indian Island article is posted in the BDN. Just FYI, every nation, state and town, including all sovereign entities, has a protocol for when assistance is needed to handle dangerous events. I appreciate the state police and all other emergency services personnel that care enough to respond and assist when PEOPLE need and call for help, regardless of their location. Indian Island water rescue, FD, and police have done, and will continue to do, the same for surrounding agencies – even if you don’t know it.

        1. I think they were upset Todd because they were not notified about them coming over to the Island and it was during their bingo.  How does that look for them when they are running a business and the state police are searching the “busses”?  The state police claimed it was for safety then why in the world wouldn’t they have been waiting for the busses on the interstate rather then waiting for them arrive on Indian Island during a very busy weekend of high stakes bingo.  That was a question that still remains unanswered.  If the state was so concerned about safety issues the busses should not have been allowed to drive all the way there do you think???

    3. Indian Island is in the news lot lately. With less than 600 people, seems to be a high number of bad apples. I wonder, did they start selling alcohol on the island?

  1. Or those “crazies” are going to give you information you didn’t have so that you can make an attempt to stop sounding so stupid.

  2. Your police get enough practice without needing anymore.  I’ll bet you can’t count how many people (non native) are reported in the news every day for domestic violence, bath salts possession and associated crimes and killing their families. I doubt you can count that high!

  3. Island police run things a bit differently Kinda make thier own rules. No different than a gated community , A not resident not visiting someone In the middle of the night is most likely up to no good. Ya the island dose have a slightly higher crime rate that is do more to socieconomics than race . I have met many outstanding natives .

    1. The Island has a slightly higher crime rate? Than what? Washington DC? Where do you get your statistics????

  4. You’re pretty obnoxious.  Indian Island, just like ANY community, has it’s share of boneheads.  This story is similar to stories from all over the state.  Negative news and bad behavior comes from EVERYWHERE.  Neighboring towns and agencies help each other out in emergency situations that have the potential to be dangerous.  This situation happened to occur in Indian Island.  It could have just as easily happened in Bangor, Orono, Belfast, Waterville, Augusta, Portland, etc.  It’s about one dumb guy that behaved badly who happens to live there.  It has nothing to do with ethnicity.  Anyone who makes it about that IS being racist.

    1. I know, racist this, racist that.  It’s getting old.  anyways, indian island is not a town.  They have made it very clear they are a sovereign nation.  You dont see mounties coming here to help us out.

    1. Racism would be me saying I didnt like the Indians.  I’ve never said I didnt like them.  In fact, I have nothing against them as a people.  What I have a problem with is that they are always talking about how they are a sovereign nation.  If they were a true sovereign nation, they would have their own government, their own military, their own structure instead of relying on the state of maine for those on welfare (not all of them), our military for protection, and our police force to enforce laws of their sovereign nation.  Every indian I’ve met from the island has been a good person.

I had to go over there a while back for a service call for work.  From the very moment I crossed the bridge I was followed by tribal police.  I was in a company vehicle, with the name of the business all over it.  Once the officer had enough of stalking me, I was pulled over and given the third degree about not being welcome on their island.  He told me. “The only time your people are allowed here is for Bingo.”  I told him I was there at the request of a customer, and he told me if I didnt leave the island he was gonna charge me with trespassing.  When I told him that a trespassing charge wouldn’t stick, he said, “Believe me I’ll find something to charge you with.”

      Who’s racist now?
