PRIDE’S CROSSING, Mass., and MOUNT DESERT – Samuel Vaughan died April 15, 2012, surrounded by family at Beverly Hospital, after a good and long life. Born Sept. 29, 1915, in Beverly Farms, Mass., to Samuel Vaughan Sr. and Ellen (May) Loring Vaughan, he was a lifelong resident of Pride’s Crossing, Mass., with much vacation and retirement time spent in Mount Desert.
He attended North Shore Country Day School, Belmont Hill, Mass., and Harvard University, graduating in 1938. During World War II he served his country as a first lieutenant in the Army Air Corps, working as a meteorologist for European Theatre of Operations. A railroad aficionado, Sam was employed by the New York, New Haven and Hartford, later Penn Central Railroad, as a passenger sales representative. He was a member of Eastern Yacht Club and Salem Marine Society, serving as master of that society from 1961 to 1963. He loved trains, Maine, sailing, jazz, and old newspapers; but the real joy of his life was his wife and family. His quiet sense of humor and innate dignity shaped the man, and he will be missed by family and friends far and near.
Samuel Vaughan is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Joan Revell Vaughan; sister, Ellen “Tina” Vaughan Howe; three children, Allan Pinkerton Vaughan, Joanie Vaughan Ingraham and Henry Loring Vaughan and their respective spouses, Gail Mckeel Vaughan, Timothy Alexander Ingraham and Ruth Glidden Vaughan; and niece and daughter-in-law, Cecily Vaughan. He was predeceased by his son, Benjamin Hallowell Vaughan. He also leaves three grandchildren, Christopher Samuel Vaughan, Alexander Revell Ingraham and Samuel Douglas Ingraham; and one stepgranddaughter, Sarah Robinson. His grandson, Benjamin Hallowell Vaughan, predeceased him. Nellie, the army truck, also still survives.
A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Saturday, May 19, at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 705 Hale St., Beverly Farms, Mass. Donations in his memory may be made to Essex County Greenbelt, 82 Eastern Ave., Essex, MA 01929; Salem Marine Society, care of Essex County Community Foundation, Peter B.
