FAIRFIELD, Maine — A New Hampshire man is facing charges after police say they seized a large quantity of crack cocaine from a motel in which he was staying.

Jeremiah Jackson, 24, of Nashua, N.H., allegedly had 33.2 grams of crack cocaine and $2,300 cash when police raided his room at the American Lodge motel Monday morning, Fairfield Police Chief John Emery said Wednesday.

Emery added the investigation had been ongoing for “approximately a month.”

Jackson was under police surveillance by Fairfield and Waterville police, along with the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office, during the investigation, Emery said, and police stopped him in his vehicle on Main Street Monday morning.

Police said stopping Jackson on the road was a safer option than taking him into custody at the motel.

“The rooms are fairly small, for safety reasons we didn’t want to go through that door, and had he been armed it would’ve put us in a poor situation,” Emery said.

Jackson, his vehicle and his room were searched, and when the drugs, cash and other drug paraphernalia were turned up, he was arrested and charged with trafficking in crack cocaine, a Class A felony, and violation of conditions of release, police said.

Emery said Jackson had been out on bail on a previous drug charge and he had no weapons on him.

He was taken to the Somerset County Jail, where he remained Wednesday. Jackson faces up to 25 years behind bars if convicted of the Class A offense, and an additional 5 years on the Class C count.
