PORTAGE, Maine — A 20-year-old Ashland man was summoned for providing a place for minors to consume alcohol after a fight at a party drew attention to the gathering.

State police Sgt. Brian Harris said late Monday evening that the incident happened at 1:30 a.m. Sunday.

According to Harris, police went to a camp on Portage Lake after a large party was reported. Harris and Troopers Dennis Quint and Todd Stetson went to the scene and found that what originally had started out as a small party had grown larger than expected during the evening.

Harris said that a fight broke out after a disagreement between some of the revelers resulting in the assault on a male at the party.

Police also discovered that several minors who had been drinking were in attendance at the party.

Marcus Belanger, 20, of Ashland was summoned for providing a place for minors to consume alcohol.

No charges were filed in the assault as the involved participants had worked out their differences and did not want to cooperate in the investigation, according to Harris.

Troopers were assisted by the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Department, the Ashland Police Department and the U.S. Border Patrol.

  1. They should leave them alone. Private property. The way it used to be was young  adults could drink on private property… Hey join the army and get blown up at 17 yet you can’t drink until your 21. Stupid

    1. When I was 18 it was legal to drink and then they changed the drinking age to 20 and I wasn’t legal. That was hard to swallow. No pun intended. The biggest reason to raise the drinking age was to keep it from getting it to the kids below 18. I have to explain this to my own 18 yo who can get booze anytime and complains about being an “adult” and not being able to drink.  If anything, anyone who is buyng alcohol for minors is just ruining it for all 18-20 year olds. They should also be prosecuted harshly to make an example and maybe buying for minors will lessen greatly.

  2. Yawn, people have been doing this for generations.  People know not to drive now, and either stay put or catch a ride with a non-drinker.  Yes, there are still plenty of non-drinkers around, contrary to police beliefs.

    1. PEOPLE KNOW HOW NOT TO DRIVE WHEN THEY ARE DRUNK NOW?  How come people are still getting arrested everyday for drunk driving? Yes people have been doing this for generations and they still are.  Common sense is not something people who have been drinking too much have.  I am glad that the police showed up.  Would you still be making these same comments if one of those drinking had driven home and got into an accident and one of your children or close relatives had been killed as a result?

  3. The drinking laws really need to be reformed in the country. Those same “kids” could be driving trucks loaded with tons of logs, or flying $50 million fighter jets. But a can of PBR is off limits.

Until that time, the law is the law.

  4. i used to think the same thing about legalizing alcohol at a younger age when i was 18/19/20…i’m 25 now and i’m all set…the more busts the better cause I can laugh now

  5. TROOPERS, SHERIFFS, BOARDER PATROL, and ASHLAND PD????  REALLY????  WOW, I wonder what the real criminals were doing while all the county’s law inforcement was busy slapping wrists.
