SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — A man and a woman were arrested late Thursday night when they refused to cooperate with officials responding to a report of domestic disturbance, police say.

A witness told police that a man and a woman were fighting inside an Ocean Street apartment building, Lt. Frank Clark said in a news release.

When police knocked on the door, Nicholas Pallas, 32, of South Portland slammed the door in their faces, according to Clark.

Officers tried unsuccessfully to get Pallas and the woman, Carol Vining, 23, also of South Portland, out of the apartment. When Pallas and Vining refused, officers forced their way into the apartment and located the two in a crawl space.

Both suspects continued to resist the officers: Pallas pointed a can of pepper spray at police and unsuccessfully tried to spray them while Vining resisted the officers’ contact. Officers used a Taser on Pallas, who continued to fight with officers as he was taken into custody.

Both suspects were taken to the Cumberland County Jail.

Pallas is facing charges of refusing to submit to arrest, violation of conditions of release, assault, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and criminal use of disabling chemicals. Vining was charged with refusing to submit to detention and violation of conditions of release.

  1. There you go! Pepper spray the cops it’s not like they don’t have  Tasers and a guns.  People get brighter and brighter with each passing day.

  2. Someday they will be able to tell their grandchildren the tales of their youth. It’ll go something like this – Your grandfather and I were the Bonnie and Clyde of our time. We tried to die like them, but the pepper spray isn’t nearly as effective as a Tommy Gun and the coppers caught on to our ruse.
