ORRINGTON and BREWER – Frederick J. “Fred” Smith, 86, died peacefully June 2, 2012, in Bangor, after a brief illness. He was born Oct. 5, 1925, in Hampden, son of Albert Smith and Maria E. (Tupper) Smith Hewes.

Fred, as he was known, was a World War II veteran serving with the Timberwolf Division of the U.S. Army in the European Theatre, where he earned a Purple Heart. He was a longtime resident of Orrington and had recently been residing with his daughter in Brewer. Fred was a great storyteller and enjoyed visiting relatives in Calais. He also enjoyed his visits with his brother, Rolly Smith, where he and his friend, Lila, would enjoy a home cooked meal.

Surviving are two daughters, Evelyn “Bunny” Bernier of Brewer and Katherine Smith of Bangor; son-in-law, Gerald Bernier Sr. of Kenduskeag; five grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, several great-great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; five brothers, George, Albert “Abby,” Roland “Rolly,” Carl and Parker Smith; and three sisters, Edith, Emiline and Lillian.

A graveside service with military honors will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, June 7, at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta. For those who wish, memorial contributions may be made to Disabled American Veterans, John F. Kennedy Chapter No. 6, P.O. Box 1535, Bangor, ME 04402-1535.
