HOLDEN, Maine — The man who broke into the Squire convenience store early Sunday morning cut the phone line but didn’t entirely disable the video surveillance cameras, owner David Morrill said late Sunday morning.

“We do have images” that have been given to Holden Police, he said. “They did cut our phone lines out back [and] they tried to disable the video system” but didn’t know the connection had a backup system.

“He’s got a hoodie on and a little bit of a mask,” Police Chief Gene Worcester said.

The burglary occurred at around 1:25 a.m., the police chief said.

“They pried the back door open” to get inside, Worcester said.

The Squire is located on U.S. Route 1A, at the junction with Route 46.

Cheryl Morrill arrived at the store just after 5 a.m. and found the area behind the counter in shambles, her husband said. She tried to use the phone but it was dead so “she ran out the front door and got into her car,” said Morrill, a Holden firefighter and EMT who had worked the night shift and was home sleeping.

“She woke me up and we called 911 on the cellphone,” he said.

The burglar got a small amount of cash from a drop box and took Camel- and Marlboro-brand cigarettes, Worcester said.

The Dysart’s convenience store, located near the Brewer town line, was recently burglarized in the same manner, with the wires to the store being cut, the police chief said.

“We had a similar one at Dysart’s about two weeks ago — the same M.O.,” Worcester said.

The image will be released Sunday night, said Jim Ellis, Holden public safety director.

“Someone is going to recognize the clothing,” he said.

Those who have information about the either store burglary is asked to contact Holden Police Department at 843-5442.

Morrill said he is just happy no one was injured in the crime.

“Replaceable items are replaceable items,” the store owner said. “At least no one got hurt. We’ve been here 12 years and this is the first time anything like this has happened.”

  2. I never did see the pictures of the Hollywoods Casino elevator Robber…  What happened to that case??  Did the Casino style justice take over the case..
Hey BDN What happened to that story??? Follow up please…

    1. I think that may have been the initial idea of cutting the phone wire- to cut the alarm call into the security company.

  3. Most likely smokers, who need smokes.
Instead of meth clinic’s, we should replace them with a couple of stop smoking clinics as it was a very hard thing to do (to stop) Most smokers do not commit crimes so we should help them out, some. Usually, will take a month, not several  years on the taxpayers, shoulders. Just to many people using the current system and avoiding being tested. The people need to demand drug testing for any type of tax payer assistance, period.

    1. Oh please? As smelly, disgusting, messy, death enhancing and expensive that it is, some just like to smoke.  No rehab ‘help’ wanted or needed.  :)
