JACKMAN, Maine — The Maine attorney general’s office on Monday released the name of the man who died Saturday night after an exchange of gunfire with U.S. Border Patrol agents who were responding to a 911 call.
Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Margaret Greenwald determined that Charles Robinson, 75, died of a gunshot wound to the chest, according to Maine attorney general’s office spokeswoman Martha Demeritt.
About 7:30 p.m. Saturday, two U.S. Border Patrol agents with U.S. Customs and Border Protection responded to an emergency call from a woman being assaulted in a domestic dispute, said David Astle, assistant chief patrol agent for U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
“Late Saturday night there was a 911 call of a domestic situation on Long Pond Road in Jackman. The female caller was in a verbal argument with her partner, Charles Robinson,” said Demeritt. “She said there was a need for an ambulance because he was highly intoxicated and had fallen.
“Mr. Robinson had reportedly threatened to kill the female if she called 911,” continued Demeritt. “The phone was disabled while she was on the phone with 911.”
The closest law enforcement agency was U.S. Customs and Border Protection in Jackman, which was three miles from the residence, said Demeritt.
“We normally assist state, local and county law enforcement agencies when they request or need it,” said Astle.
“Two Border Patrol agents responded to the call, and when they arrived, they were met with gunfire,” said Demeritt, adding that one agent was shot. “They returned gunfire.”
One of the agents suffered wounds from shotgun pellets. He was treated and then released from Jackman Region Health Center. Demeritt said it’s protocol not to release names of federal agents.
After returning gunfire, the agents retreated outside the residence, set up a perimeter and called for a Maine State Police Tactical Team, said Astle. After unsuccessful attempts to contact Robinson, officers “entered the residence and found him deceased from apparent gunshot wounds,” said Demeritt.
Demeritt said the attorney general’s office had no further information on the incident and wouldn’t have any more until it completes its investigation.
Acting Somerset County District Attorney Alan Kelley said Robinson pleaded guilty on March 14 in Skowhegan District Court to a disorderly conduct charge. He served 12 hours in jail, he said.

Can’t agrue with the outcome of this.
Oh but they will.
lol!
A no-brainer – if you fire at law enforcement they will return fire. I agree, can’t argue with the outcome at all.
Fire control?
It appears from the outcome that someone had decent “fire control” (your words). Or were you looking for a Janet Reno style tank assault with actual fire as the result?
Much better outcome than a dead Border Patrol Agent killed by drug runners armed with US taxpayer-funded guns.
Obama 2012….let the carnage continue!!
Bush 2000! and 2004! Oh wait… let’s forget about him and this same program that was run under him, just so we can hate Obama.
So if a ships captain runs it onto the rocks you would blame the previous captain? Yikes! At what point will this prez take responsibility for ANYTHING! If he is reelected will he still blame all his own screwups on the previous president?
I would blame the previous captain for pointing the ship in that direction and starting a course that couldn’t be changed solely by the word of the new captain. Of course, your statement isn’t representative in any way of a government run program… If Obama tried to go about and change things based on what he believed, with no input from that useless Congress or any other waste of space representatives, you would be crying foul because he was doing something on his own. Nice try though.
Correct me if I’m wrong but he had two years with majorities in both the house and the senate when he began his tenure. Instead of trying to achieve something fruitful he instead pushed through a health-care plan that a majority of the country didn’t want and has a strong likelihood of being over turned by the Supreme Court. The reason that we have the congress your disparaging is because of his own actions. It’s simple cause and effect and now he’s reaping the benefits of his own actions. Bush may have started the car but Obama is the one mashing the accelerator as we head toward the cliff.
You might want to look up the use and meaning of FILIBUSTER.
Obama had nothing to do with this 75-year-old in Jackman getting killed by the U.S. Border Patrol.
Now tell me he did.
Never said it did. I was responding to the above post, nothing more.
Your whole piece is about Obama. What has that got to do with the Jackman shooting?
GOPers will infiltrate into every nook and cranny – just to attack Obama.
He’s a good man. A smart man. Well educated. Philosophical. Forceful. I’ve read, listened, and watched hundreds of attempts to vilify him. He’s still standing tall. I’d follow him anywhere – over the hills and far away, through the swamps, jungles, minefields, shell holes, fox holes, bomb craters, whatever.
He promised us Bin Laden. He got him. He cut the disgusting overcharge by banks on credit cards. Refinancing home mortgages. Changing insurance laws to help parents insure their kids – and more.
Briney….the Democrats and the Left did the exact same thing with attacks on President G,H.W. Bush. Why do you think that our political system is so dysfunctional? Both sides attacking the other side and looking for “nook and cranny – just to attack”.
And please, give proper credit where credit is due. President Obama didn’t get Osama bin Laden. The proper credit goes to Seal Team Six that planned, carried out and executed bin Laden. President Obama gave the order….they military carries them out.
And I thank “him” for cutting those “disgusting overcharge by banks on credit cards”. So when is “he” going to cut the resulting – 25-27%+ interest charges that have taken the place of those “disgusting overcharge by banks on credit cards”?!
And if refinancing home mortgages has been a positive thing why are we still experiencing record rates of home foreclosures?
Your reply so typifies republican arrogance.
It was the president – the country’s C-in-C of the Armed Forces, who said “Go.” Just like “Ike” on D-Day. Bush washed his hands of any attempts to get Bin Laden. “I couldn’t care where he is,” he said. Obama made a public promise that he would get Bin Laden – and, he did. He worked with the military throughout the entire plan. If – and, it could have failed-I suppose you and the clan would be having a field day.
If you choose to separate the C-in-C from his position and relegate success strictly to the operatives, that is nothing short of heaping scorn on the military, who shed their blood in Iraq solely on Bush’s command decision, oh, and supported on both sides by a “misinformed” Congress.
Having served and survived, I’m completely aware of the chain of command. No one moves unless ordered on orders from the top.
Fickle republicans blinded by political zeal, unable to discuss and deliberate outside of their narrow boundaries, have short changed this nation.
Briney…Brine…Briney your response is so typical of the listeners of the Pulse Morning Show, Stephanie Miller and Ed Schultz.
Not only are you taking the “quote” out of context but the “quote” isn’t even accurate!
Here is the question asked of President G.H.W. Bush on March 13, 2002
Mr. President, in your speeches now you
rarely talk or mention Osama bin Laden. Why is that? Also, can you tell the American people if you have any
more information, if you know if he is dead or alive? Final part — deep in your heart, don’t you truly believe that until you find out if he is dead or alive, you won’t really eliminate the threat of —
THE PRESIDENT: Deep in my heart I know the man is on the run, if he’s alive at all. Who knows if he’s hiding in some
cave or not; we haven’t heard from him in a long time. And the idea of focusing on one person is — really indicates to
me people don’t understand the scope of the mission.
Terror is bigger than one person. And he’s just — he’s a person who’s now been
marginalized. His network, his host government has been destroyed. He’s the ultimate parasite who found weakness, exploited it, and met his match. He is — as I mentioned in my speech, I do mention the fact that this is a fellow who is willing to commit youngsters to their death and he, himself, tries to hide — if, in fact, he’s hiding at all.
So I don’t know where he is. You know, I just don’t spend that much time on him, Kelly, to be honest with you. I’m more worried about making sure that our soldiers are well-supplied; that the strategy is clear; that the coalition is
strong; that when we find enemy bunched up like we did in Shahikot
Mountains, that the military has all the support it needs to go in and do the job, which they did.
And there will be other battles in Afghanistan. There’s going to be other struggles like Shahikot, and I’m just as confident about the outcome of those future battles as I was about Shahikot,
where our soldiers are performing brilliantly. We’re tough, we’re strong, they’re well-equipped. We have a good
strategy. We are showing the world we know how to fight a guerrilla war with conventional means.
Follow on Question –
Q But don’t you believe that the threat that bin Laden posed won’t truly be eliminated until he is found either dead
or alive?
THE PRESIDENT: Well, as I say, we haven’t heard much from him. And I wouldn’t necessarily say he’s at the center
of any command structure. And, again, I don’t know where he is. I — I’ll repeat what I said. I truly am not that concerned about him. I know he is on the run. I was concerned about him, when he had taken over a country. I was concerned about the fact that he was basically running Afghanistan and calling the shots for the Taliban.
But once we set out the policy and started executing the plan, he became — we shoved him out more and more on the margins. He has no place to train his al Qaeda killers anymore. And if we — excuse me for a minute — and if we find a training camp, we’ll take care of it. Either we will or our friends will. That’s one of the things — part of the new phase that’s becoming apparent to the American people is that we’re working closely with other governments to deny sanctuary, or training, or a place to hide, or a place to raise money.
And we’ve got more work to do. See, that’s the thing the American people have got to understand, that we’ve only been at this six months. This is going to be a long struggle. I keep saying that; I don’t know whether you all believe me or
not. But time will show you that it’s going to take a long time to achieve this objective. And I can assure you, I am
not going to blink. And I’m not going to get tired. Because I know what is at stake. And history has called us to action, and I am going to seize this moment for the good of the world, for peace in the world and for freedom.

I will respond to the balance of your post shortly.
OK now for the rest of your post…
“It was the president – the country’s C-in-C of the Armed Forces, who said “Go.””
Did I say something different? Let’s see, ” President Obama gave the order….they military carries them out.” Nope I didn’t say anything different.
~~~~~
“Just like “Ike” on D-Day.”
Not even close. General Eisenhower gave the order. He even had a “press release” in his pocket to read if D-Day failed. He was ready to take responsibility for the failure OR success of the mission given him. FDR wasn’t going to “swing” if D-Day failed, “Ike” was. “Ike” was the Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces not the President.
~~~~~
“Bush washed his hands of any attempts to get Bin Laden. “I couldn’t care where he is,” he said.”
Already responded to this misquote below.
~~~~~
“Obama made a public promise that he would get Bin Laden – and, he did.”
Yes the military planned and executed the plan perfectly. No if’s, and or butt’s about it.
~~~~~
“He worked with the military throughout the entire plan.”
Really, care to provide the proof that “he worked with the military throughout the entire plan”? That is nothing more than your opinion and remains an opinion until you provide the proof.
~~~~~
“If – and, it could have failed-I suppose you and the clan would be having a field day.”
Thank you for knowing how I would respond without even meeting me. How would I have responded? Well let’s see….yes it could have failed and it seems that our military has learned very valuable lessons from past failures (Desert One ring a bell?). If we do not learn from out past failures we are bound to repeat them in the future.
~~~~~
“Heaping scorn on the military”????
What are you talking about. I give the military full credit for planning and carrying out the mission assigned. Our military does the living, bleeding and dieing based on civilian command. They are assigned a mission and THEY plan it, carry it out and live and DIE on that plan. If you think otherwise I doubt the validity of the rest of your post.
Correct me if I am wrong but from 2008 to 2010 the Republicans in the Senate tried to filibuster anything and everything they could. OVer 200 bills from the House never made it to vote in teh Senate because of this filibustering.
You make it sound like the Republicans were trying to hepl Obama not hinder him at every step.
Of course they weren’t trying to help, anymore than I would have. I saw who this man was well before the election and he has done nothing to to make me believe he’s any different than I believed he would be. Now, that being said, I do not like the idea of cutting of your nose to spite your face and the R’s bear much of the responsibility for the issues this country faces as well. Either way, come this election, I’m not excited by the idea of either man as Prez.
Is there some connection between your post and the Jackman shooting?
That’s twisted. So Obama is a victim here? I don’t think so and the voters in November will show you that they don’t buy it either. It’s the economy and we’re not stupid.
Not to worry, history shows there’s plenty of blame to go around.
This whole “conversation” is on the rocks.
Suffering from Obama Derangement Syndrome?
Suffering from Obama.
Then find something in the newspaper about Obama and post your criticism there. Obama has not been in Jackman within the past month, according to Intelligence reports.
Eh? Not quite sure what a lit elderly person has to do with Obama at all…
BOG – Bash Obama Gang – now holds the president responsible for the Jackman shooting?
Let the ludicrous hyperbole continue.
If this agent hadn’t have been shot, you, Issa, Grassley, and other republican pit bulls, would have remained ignorant of the fact that “Gun Walking” has been going on for years.
Commenters that take any story on any topic in the BDN and turn it into a political debate really should find a hobbie or something better to do.
That IS their hobby!
Agree. Maybe they need the love of a fine dog!
Gotta love a good dog
Yes, I know the love of a fine dog certainly makes me a better man.
I aspire to be the man my dogs thinks I am.
It could be a meeting of the Holy Rosary Society, a Waterfront Concert, Downtown Parking, another Drug Store Robbery. Doesn’t matter – BOG can inject some hostility into it about the president. Lot of Issas and Grassleys about.
Booze and guns don’t mix well. They never have.
maybe the old guy planned it wanted out but couldnt do it so he made the agents do it
or whom ever was the first thru the door
Since your so well versed on how this was started by Bush, maybe you can list your sources so the rest of us can read it too. Bet you can’t. Typical of all Obama zealots and his administration, blame everybody else.
But that’s what The Great Oblamer’s disciples do!
BOG is active today. Short of a news story? Why don’t you look at Romney’s latest flip-flop? No connection with Jackman and Obama.
Irrelevant to the story yes, but was the conversation at the moment.
There has been an unwritten rule for many years: A sitting President doesn’t besmirch a former President by criticizing him or blaming him. They just buck up to the job at hand. Obummer just can’t stop with the “This is what was left to me!” stuff. He should be embarrassed to be the first.
What has the Shoot Out at the Jackman Corral got to do with Bush, Cheney, Rove, Obama, Pineo, Coulter, Issa, Grassley, Hannity, O’Reilly et al?
So Customs and Border Patrol agents respond to domestic assault complaints? Who knew? I thought their mandate was border protection. Where were the local cops while all this went down?
Up in Houlton It is a real party if something like this goes down. Town Police, Sheriff, state police, Border patrol and customs show up to play. You cant dive 2 feet without seeing some type of government agent.
“You cant dive 2 feet without seeing some type of government agent. ”
Same thing thoughtout the whole Saint John Valley :-/
Sad isn’t it?
Right on. It’s a beehive for one of the biggest concentrations of coppers anywhere in Maine.
Besides local police, they have Civil Defense, Auxiliary, State Police, Sheriff’s Department, U.S. Border Patrol, and U.S. Customs. It’s the town’s major industry.
You’re right. Anything sets them off. Even a stolen car draws them out in full force. Quite a sight. Dozens of cars, blue lights and orange lights flashing, road blocks, yellow tape. Hollywood has nothing on them.
Then, ask them what is going on. “We don’t have to tell you anything.” How’d you like to be covering The County for the BDN?
Lions and tigers and bears….oh my.
Civil Defense? You stepped outside your house in the past 40 years? Wow, we pay these people to enforce our laws, then complain when they work efficiently? Your not the first person on here to sound like someone who likely has good reason to fear law enforcement of any type.
As with most posters your presumptions outweigh fact.
Yo! Bone scared and shaking of the law. Good reason to be – four or five parking tickets and one for speeding.
With a record like that, I hide in an attic corner.
That was all explained in the article…
An hour away even driving lights and sirens. Ever look at where Jackman is on the map?
He pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct charge yes. What they don’t say is that he was also charged with domestic violence criminal threatening. That charge was dropped for a guilty plea on the disorderly conduct charge. So much for cracking down on domestic violence in the state.
Aren’t plea bargains wonderful.
I’d be all for it if they had dropped the disorderly conduct and got him to plead guilty on the domestic violence charge. It seems like the only one that benefits most often are the district attorneys. They chock it up as a win and move on with out ever holding the perpetrator accountable for the more serious crimes. It truly boggles the mind.
Some of our more professional police departments would have secured the perimeter first. Attempts would have been made to contact the drunken 75-year-old, whilst at the same time attempts would be made to get his female partner out of the house.
Negotiations aimed at reaching a satisfactory conclusion by attempting to reason with the man’s obviously inebriated and disorientated state of mind, would have continued. It could have ended differently.
Instead, the U.S. Border Patrol swung by and stormed into the house, provoking an already agitated and drunken man into discharging his weapon. Where was the woman during all of this? Other than getting smashed, and putting the phone out of service – what else had he done?
That’s the way it looks from here.
Wow, so I’m guessing you were there? And I’m guessing you are or were a LEO at some time? Apparently you forget what happened with the Lakes last summer. That officer secured the perimeter and while he was doing so three people died. It’s easy to arm chair quarterback but I’m wondering if they had done as your suggesting and the man had shot the woman involved if you’d be on the same opinion.
The U.S. Border Patrol is not set up to handle domestic abuse. Its duties are to patrol the Maine-Canadian border trying to catch illegal immigrants.
The Lake shooting could have been prevented. Instead of being in custody, a dangerous man threatening bodily harm posted bail and was released back into the community.
I’m surprised that the Jackman woman survived amid all that gunfire. However, due to U.S. Border Patrol confidentiality laws, we shall never know. It took us three days to learn who was shot.
Monday morning quarterbacking at its very worst. Provoked by the Border Patrol? Read this story carefully then start over!
“That’s the way it looks from here.” Where is that? In the safety of your own home, sitting at your computer desk? I wish you could have been there so we could see your tactics in action.
You and others believe you charge into a house where a man is waiting with a loaded rifle?- shotgun?
As an aside, I’ve been with a crew that waited through the night while a spurned and liquored and beered-up drunky took spot shots through his window. No one fired back for fear of killing him, even after one of the crew almost got a shattered leg. The crew took some more close shots before command told the guy they would shoot to kill. End story. He surrendered.
The Bangor crew have quite a record for solving some dangerous face-offs peacefully.
he commited “suicide by cop”. His choice- he has likely been under the influence of alcohol for years , so his thought processes were not likely to be overly affected by the booze. sad, but he sounds as if he had a reputation for being dangerous.
just blame it on number 1 and 2 bush.good god,there were the best presidents,as will as bill clinton.obahma sucks.his health care sucks,and about every thing he has done sucks.BRING BACK GEORGE…
S0rry to hear about this tragedy in our state – especially in the smaller and border towns.
Curious that 34 of the 58 Comments had nothing whatever to do with the story. Please, those 34: get lives, pets, teddy bears (or other intimate toys), or whatever it takes (lol)
“U.S. Border Patrol confidentiality laws” which laws are you referring too? Never heard of these, are they FOIA exempt?
Had the nearest Law Enforcement (USBP) stood at the end of the driveway and waited for Mr. Robinson to his end evening of MMA Jackman would you be praising the restraint of the Agents?
How about the article itself, which says “and when they arrived, they were met with gunfire,” said Demeritt, adding that one agent was shot.”
Only information about “storming the house” comes from you.
Where did they arrive?
It took three days for “authorities” to release the man’s name.
For the rest – read my other reply.
What happened to the woman? They didn’t say.
