HOULTON – Birdena E. Tapley, 93, promoted to glory June 25, 2012, at a Mars Hill health care facility. She was born Oct. 8, 1918, in Griswald, daughter of Harry W. and Julia (Bragg) Ewings.

Birdena taught school for 25 years in one-room schoolhouses in Wytopitlock, Haynesville, South Amity and Kingman.

She is survived by her children, Maj. Sandra Sproul and husband, Jim, of Sunbury, Pa., Mary Lou Tapley of Westfield, Gary Tapley of Linneus, Brent Tapley and wife, Susan, of Monticello, and Douglas Tapley and wife, Wendy, of Hodgdon; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sister, Rita Ewings of Mars Hill; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Vincent, in 1993; son-in-law, Donald Jeffery, in 1991; several brothers and sisters.

Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Dunn Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Salvation Army with Maj. Hermas Pearl officiating. Interment will be at Linneus Cemetery.
