AUGUSTA, Maine — The fundraising gap between supporters and opponents of same-sex marriage continues to grow, according to financial reports filed Tuesday with the Maine Commission on Governmental Ethics and Election Practices.
Between May 30 and July 17, Mainers United for Marriage raised $597,579 in its effort to gain voter approval of same-sex marriage, while Protect Marriage Maine, which opposes the ballot initiative, raised $30,871. So far this year, supporters have pulled in nearly $1.1 million while opponents lag far behind in their efforts. Protect Marriage Maine reported raising $42,311 since Jan. 1.
Supporters also have outspent opponents during the most recent reporting period. Mainers United spent nearly $550,000, mostly on salaries for campaign staff, during the period, while Protect Marriage Maine’s expenses totaled about $31,000. That left supporters with nearly $300,000 in their coffers with no debt on July 17 and opponents with about $22,000 in the bank, but with unpaid debts of more than $35,000.
Under Maine election law, political action committees involved in referendum campaigns had to file reports before 11:59 p.m. Tuesday. Reports include money raised and spent between May 30 and July 17.
Mainers will vote Nov. 6 on whether to allow marriage licenses to be issued to same-sex couples. The referendum question in February was placed on the ballot after the secretary of state’s office validated the nearly 60,000 signatures on petitions submitted by supporters the previous month.
“Our strong fundraising shows the growing support for allowing same-sex couples to receive a marriage license,” Matt McTighe, campaign manager for Mainers United for Marriage, said in a press release issued Wednesday. “The grass-roots support for the campaign is incredible and mirrors the positive conversations we’re having as volunteers talk to their friends and neighbors all over Maine.”
More than 7,261 donors have contributed to the campaign. Of those, 4,761, or two-thirds, are from Maine, the press release said. The majority of the money donated to the campaign is from Maine, and 84 percent of the contributions have been for $50 or less.
The largest donation came from the Freedom to Marry PAC, created to receive funds from Facebook co-founder Chris Hughes. It reported taking in $225,200 and paying out $200,000 to Mainers United for Marriage. Hughes, who is the editor-in-chief of the liberal magazine The New Republic and owns 1 percent of Facebook, pledged supporters of same-sex marriage $100,000 if they raised $100,000 to match it.
Tim Gill, a software entrepreneur and philanthropist, launched a $100,000 fundraising challenge Wednesday to support Mainers United for Marriage, the coalition announced.
Gill, the founder and former chairman of Quark Inc., a page-layout and design software company, will match dollar for dollar every donation to Mainers United between Wednesday and Aug. 10. The $100,000 matching challenge comes in honor of the last 100 days of the campaign, which begins on July 29, according to a Mainers United press release.
Bob Emrich, spokesman for Protect Marriage Maine, said Wednesday that the fundraising gap was a concern but not a surprise.
“I’m not worried,” he said. “They don’t win just because they have more money. What we lack in funding we have to make up for in hard work.”
In the successful campaign to repeal same-sex marriage in 2009, supporters of the law passed by the Legislature, then controlled by Democrats, and signed by Gov. John Baldacci raised $4 million compared with the $2.5 million raised by opponents.
Most of the money raised by referendum opponents came from churches, according to information filed Tuesday. Protect Marriage Maine asked churches to take up a special collection for the campaign on Father ’ s Day.
Protect Marriage Maine’s largest donor was Faith Evangelical Church in Waterville, which reported raising $7,025 in June. Organizations raising $5,000 or more in a calendar year are required to register as a PAC.
A total of 15 PACS — eight supporting and seven opposing — are registered under the referendum question with the commission. One, the Dirigo Family PAC, has been terminated and No on 1 Protect Maine Equality reported no activity.
The two newest ones were both supporters: Mid-Coast for Freedom to Marry, based in Thomaston, and the Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders PAC, based in Boston. The Mid-Coast PAC reported raising $5,042 and spending just $18 for postage during the period. GLAD, the legal organization that successfully sued Massachusetts to legalize same-sex marriage, reported no activity for the period.
The PAC for EqualityMaine, the organization that circulated the petitions to get the question on the ballot, reported contributing about $1,100 in an in-kind contribution of one staff member’s time. EqualityMaine, however, is paying 50 percent of the rent and expenses for the pro side’s offices in Portland, Lewiston and Bangor, according to the 110-page report filed by Mainers United.
The next reporting deadline is Oct. 5.

This is telling about the socioeconomic backgrounds about each side.
Education level might have something to do with it, too.
I didn’t want to generalize by saying that most people who don’t support it are ignorant, but I guess it goes without saying.
And from big Republican donors too! It’ll pass this time around.
GOOD JOB Mainers United for Marriage!!!!!!!!!! GO GET EM…heterosexuals have made a MOCKERY of marriage, they are the last ones that should be pointing fingers and criticizing
I’ve never heard anyone in the pro-marriage side bash all heterosexuals. You’re the first one, and I think that is strange.
If Mainers pass this, they will get what they deserve. Happy landing.
they will get what every other state that has legalized gay marriage got– no problems and nothing hurting anyones marriage
no just special rights!
No, just equal rights. FTFY
Not true at all!
What special right are you saying this will give anyone specifically?
Heterosexuals have the right to marry the partner of their choosing. Homosexuals do not, solely because they are gay or lesbian. Legalizing same sex marriage would allow homosexuals the same rights that are afforded to opposite sex couples. If you want to counter that, you are going to have to do better than saying nope without any reason to support your statement.
It’s not special to be treated equally.
”’
Handy cap people have special right like parking spaces
You mean I can get a special license plate if I’m gay???? Where do I sign up?
yes if you are handy cap
explain how its special rights– if you think its special rights, then all marriage is a special right.
no commonsense with you–
Nothing sounds more ignorant than people saying that civil marriage for same sex couples means “special rights”… In actuality we are simply asking for the same rights that heterosexuals get from civil marriage.
Exactly! It IS time for Christians and homophobics to STOP expecting special rights! They should not want the special right to dictate who other Americans love and/or marry. ENOUGH is enough with them demanding special rights!
Once again, I will ask but not receive an answer… “What special rights are those?”
False. Actually in NY alone, many state/town workers lost their jobs over this. They felt due to their religious convictions (Christians mostly) who could not be a part of gay marriage (such as issuing the license or baking a wedding cake) were either sued, taken to court, threatened or lost their job. Indeed, gay marriage supporters are causing evil and will harm the children they raise under their roofs.
untrue-you should stop listening to right wing wackos–
If you are a state or town worker you can not deny someone something due to your own religious beliefs period and should be fired for doing so. Not issuing a marriage license to a gay couple when it is legal to do so based on your own personal beliefs violates the discrimination laws and you should be fired for doing so. Wouldn’t you want a town clerk fired for refusing to issue a fishing license to Mary Jane Watson simply because their beliefs say that women aren’t allowed to fish? When you work for the state or town you are a public servant and agree to do your job based on the law, not your personal beliefs.
\ @ ///
You mean like gays and lesbians could legally lose their jobs or housing or be refused public accommodations in Maine prior to 2005 and still can in many US states that don’t have orientation in their anti-discrimination laws – just because they are gay or lesbian? Is that Evil or moral in your opinion?
Jack
You mean like a boost to the state economy?
You’re right. We deserve to be known as a state that treats all people equally.
Oh, and the economic boost from more weddings won’t hurt, either.
This state needs SOMETHING to bring some $$ in.LePage hasn’t brought in a dime.I know a photographer who worked for a wedding photographer that wouldn’t perform gay weddings.Guess what.He is closing up shop at the end of 2012.She is still working-for a new photographer who doesn’t discriminate and has plenty of work well through next year. They are ready to open up shop in Maine if business warrants it.NY has already seen a $275M influx of $$ since the July 2011 legalization of SSM.
Can’t be any worse than all the divorces opposite sex couples get.
I agree that ALL Maine families deserve the ability to enter into civil marriage, to protect the lives they have built together and the children they are raising together.
Glad you are starting to understand the good that will come from this.
Oh my dear… since you’ve mentioned it a few times now, please explain and enlighten everyone as to how GAY MARRIAGE would PROTECT gay/lesbian families and their rights? I’m intriqued by your statements, but fail to see how they’re accurate. Marriage doesn’t PROTECT ANYONE heterosexual or homosexual. Marriage is a SACRED VOW, not a Protection Order granted by the judicial system.
Religious marriage is a sacred vow, civil marriage is not. Civil marriage will protect same sex couples and their rights in terms of hospital visitation and inheretance, among many other things.
Hate to argue the points you’re desperately trying to make, however, the two things you’ve listed are easily taken care of by simply listing your heirs in a will and as for hospital visitation… I’m sure hospitals are not discriminating against gays/lesbians from visiting their partners. I still fail to see where the PROTECTION becomes a factor. It was stated they want protection for what they have already created. Nothing is threatening gay/lesbian relationships as they already stand. IF They have already created families and relationships on their own, gay marriage isnt going to change or enhance that with PROTECTION
The hospital may not discriminate but the family of the sick person can and do stop SS couples from being together in the hospital.
…..
If you really want to go for the protection angle, California is a great example. Same sex couples had the right to marry. Same sex marriage was legal. These couples received the state benefits of marriage. However, Prop 8 was passed, removing the right of marriage from same sex couples. While the couples who were lucky enough to get married before Prop 8 are currently still married, people are still working to invalidate those marriages. The right to marriage is what needs to be protected.
Also, as far as marriage being a right, the Supreme Court ruled that marriage is a “fundamental right” in the Loving v. Virginia case. To reiterate, it is the right to marry that needs to be protected.
“I’m sure hospitals are not discriminating against gays/lesbians from visiting their partners” – It would be nice if this weren’t true. But it does happen. http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/05/12/how-hospitals-treat-same-sex-couples/
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pR9gyloyOjM – This video is also a good example of how same sex marriage is needed to protect gay couples and their rights.
No amount of legal documents will extend social security survivor benefits to a same-sex spouse without a civil marriage certificate.
No amount of legal documents will give access to military base housing and commissary privileges to partners of active soldiers.
There are over 1,100 benefits and privileges for civil marriage, and many of those are unavailable without legal paperwork.
But even without all that— it is disingenuous to suggest that same sex couples should draft dozens of legal documents at considerable expense, and carry them on their person at all times, to achieve a sampling of the benefits one gets with a $30 marriage certificate.
Try educating yourself on the subject honey, then join the discussion.
Obviously your comment wasn’t your idea either. Difference in opinion doesn’t mean ignorance MY DEAR… It simply means someone failed to make a valid argument. Go get an education in communication then come back and try to school me. Thank you.
Here’s some reading material on some of the benefits of civil marriage:
http://www.gao.gov/archive/1997/og97016.pdf
2004 update:
http://www.gao.gov/new.items/d04353r.pdf
Civil marriage with a civil marriage license, performed outside a church, without a member of clergy and with no mention of god has legal rights, protections and benefits for the couple and any children they may raise. Sacred vows performed in a church, by a member of the clergy, that mentions god does not provide legal rights, protections or benefits for the couple or any children they may raise – unless the couple has a civil marriage license. Did you get a license or did you just take the sacred vows? Do or will you benefit from joint tax returns, spousal benefits from SS or pension, or any of the other 1000+ rights the state and federal governments provide to married couples?
Jack
Civil marriage conveys irreproducible benefits. There are over 1,100 benefits and privileges extended by our government, contingent on marital status, at the federal level alone.
This includes everything from taxation to military base housing to eligibility for grants and loans (and how much those grants and loans might be), veterans benefits, immigration status, trade, conflict of interest, and yes family violence laws.
Children are better protected when they are in a married household, for if a divorce occurs there are protections in place to assure the child is adequately cared for, moreso than when cohabiting partners split.
That is true. The state will continue to fall apart, starting with the poor children who are forced to grow up in those fake marriages. And yes, they will always be fake because God will never approve them (even if they pretend He does). It says loud and clear God’s position of homosexuality right in the Bible in both the Old and New Testament.
Fake marriages because God doesn’t approve? I’m heterosexual, legally married by a federal magistrate in a civil ceremony 28 years ago. God had no part in our wedding. Our “poor” children are doing quite well, thank you. One having just earned her master’s degree. As for citing the Bible, we’re supposed to put to death those who plant different crops side by side. (Leviticus)
Kids raised in an intolerant religious household are at a distinct disadvantage when going up against kids raised in an atmosphere of scientific inquiry, nonjudgmentalism and love.Congratulations on your success.
Those “poor children” want their parents to be able to wed! They are already being raised in same-sex households, extending civil marriage protections to them is the right thing to do.
Wow…. so a fairy tale is your defense?
At least fairy tales are enjoyable for kids.
Here’s a newsflash that I know will absolutely STUN you. Has it ever occurred to you that not everything revolves around Christianity? Or your God? That not everyone whose lives you are trying to mess with is Christian?
Who are you to force your religious beliefs on other people that you probably don’t even know?
That takes a special kind of arrogance, that’s for sure.
Hopefully, the amount of money taken in/spent will not be the determining factor for Maine voters, who have consistently been against marriage between homosexual and lesbian couples.
As shown by all the out of State money that paid for that opinion making in the past,
right ? I wondered if putting it on ballot so soon again was a good idea, but it appears because it’s during a Presidential election year, the conservative out of State money is spread thin, all politics being local, after all, and not be being dumped into telling lies in Maine, this time around.
Homosexual-
a person who is sexually attracted to people of their own sex
You knew that right?
Whose life and freedom are you for?
Pedophiles are attracted to children. Homosexuality will always be a disorder, just like those attracted to children–it is entirely unnatural. Very, very wrong and deep down, those with those unnatural attractions KNOW they are wrong. The only difference now is they ignore their conscience (and God) and push their s…xual rights on others.
Really? Becuase when I’m with my boyfriend, it feels natural. And every reputable psychiactric association says that homosexuality is a natural variation of human sexuality. So I think I’m going to side with the experts on this one.
When I’m cuddle next to my kitty that feels natural too.
]]] 0 ]]]
There is very little difference. Both orientations are unnatural, perverted and disgusting sexual behavior. But you don’t want people to think about the sex part of it do you? Just two consenting adults who ‘love’ each other – sick.
Know what else is sick? 300 million dead people killed for heresy against your god. Jonestown and Waco were sick. Following a jewish zombie and eating of his flesh and blood is sick. Bombing abortion clinics is sick. Pedophile priests are sick. Know what the huge difference between SSM and Christianity is? SSM doesn’t hurt or kill anyone.
What is sick too is a doctor who sucks a baby out of a woman’s womb because her and her no good sperm donor were too lazy to prevent a pregnancy in the first place.
No there is no difference they are both sexual perversions.
Your entire church is a perversion of the message you are so adamantly trying to defend.
What’s my church?
Yay! Kitties need love too!!!!
Ppppuuuurrrrrrrr!!!! MEOW!!!! ;) HAHA
Even just the thought of being with a woman seems very unnatural to me.
I know! I can’t even imagine being romantically involved with a woman. It may sound cheesy, but being with my boyfriend is the happiest I’ve ever been. Anyone who wants to tell me that I should be ashamed of my relationship can go screw themselves. They have the right to that opinion, doesn’t mean I need to listen to them.
If you cannot argue against gay marriage without bringing up pedophilia, you don’t have an argument against gay marriage.
Pedophilia and homosexuality are two very different things. Pedophiles are predators who target and victimize children for sexual gratification. Two consenting adults do not make a predator and a victim.
Jack
Homosexual are the most protected group out there. Penn State never went after Jerry Sandusky because they knew he was homosexual. UM protected a now retired professor who was homosexual she emotionally abused students for years, but the university was afraid to do anything because she would whined about being picked on because of her sexual choice.
Sandusky was not homosexual, he was (is) a pedophile. Look it up.
Get real, he was a homosexual who was a pedophile.
Is that why he was married to a woman?
Doesn’t mean a thing, he and his wife (like Bob Carlton) never had any children.
Crazy. You think that the evidence that this man was abusing those poor little boys wouldn’t be enough to fire him and that they were afraid that he’d sue them for discrimination?
Dear, that’s the craziest thing I’ve read from you in a long time!
No Joe, what is crazy is there was evidence, so why didn’t they go after him? Plus Joe you never even respond about a homosexual professor at UM who emotionally abused students, that the university got complaints about every year.
Okay, I’ll respond. I know only the few lines of text you wrote about this woman, so I cannot comment on that case. I know more about the Penn State case than I know about the UMaine case.
I forgot what your point is…is it that the homosexual community is so strong that we will sue anyone who uncovers a sex crime committed by a gay person?
Time to look at the CC and Penn State instead of the tired and disproved “blame the homos”argument.I’d much rather have my kids around a gay couple than a priest or any of the other liars who take their marching orders from the cover up professionals in Rome.
….
OMG how can one person be so ignorant?
Religion has no place in this discussion. Separation of church and state, remember?
Oh, the church has lost it’s rights in this already? I don’t think so. You haven’t gotten that far yet but we know you are trying to get there.
You are absolutely advocating that MY church shall not have the right to marry my boyfriend and me. What do you say about the MANY churches that support this? They are churches and it is a religion, so what about THEIR freedom? If we win, your church can still not marry gays while we can. If you win, then you will STILL not marry gays, but neither can my church.
Yeah, that’s freedom of religion alright.
How is my “s…xual” right forced on you?
Why, I bet if you didn’t read the paper or watch tv, you’d know little to nothing about this issue.
I love your moniker ‘4lifeand freedom’ guess that only applies to straight people pffffffft.
According to the gay movement in this country, it appears gay people only want freedom, because they have been restricting religious freedom for many people already–even causing them to lose jobs (which is very immoral and evil). Gay people only care about THEIR OWN rights and not the rights of others.
This isn’t true at all. We are absolutely caring about the rights of others. The front lines of the civil rights movement in the 50’s and 60’s had many gays marching with the blacks, for example.
And where are we infringing on anyone’s religious freedoms? Your religious views don’t allow you to murder/sacrifice nonbelievers in our country, they shouldn’t allow you to otherwise infringe on the civil rights of others.
There’s no shortage of violence including murder, arson and bombings on the anti choice side but the media skips right over that.Don’t forget the R playbook that tried to drive a wedge between gays and blacks using conservative black religious leaders.
I think she means the right to go about her business secure in the knowledge that the evil gays don’t have the same opportunities that she has.
Just the FACT that there are gays out there living a life comparable to their own goes against their religion, I guess. Add to that the fact that my boyfriend and I, who are already living together, will one day wed in Maine-that’s just toooo much infringement!!!
You mean like gays and lesbians could legally be fired (and still can be in many US states) from their jobs simply because they are gay or lesbian?
By the way, those county clerks etc. who “lost” their jobs through their objections – quit – their choice.
Jack
Not to mention the huge numbers of gays(adults and children)bullied, harassed, driven to suicide, etc.Read the RS article about gay kids bullied to death in Michelle Bachmann’s home district.Nothing was done until lawsuits were brought.Even then, the $$ don’t bring back your child.
—–
Melora, isn’t it a sin to lie?
Oh… the great “Religious Repression” argument. Ok… well as an Atheist that has had the belief oppressed for over 2000 years. No gay person ever made someone lose a job unless the person deserved it for saying extremely unjust comments. I’d support them firing a person who was “gay-bashing” at work just as much as I would if they were “Bible Bashing.”
From Pastor Emrich himself: “Bob Emrich, chairman of Protect Marriage Maine, which opposes gay marriage, has said it’s unnecessary to include the religious exemption in the question because the clergy is protected by the First Amendment from being required to perform marriages.”
As for jobs, yes, it’s been said. You don’t do your job, you suffer the consequences.
Freedom of religion does NOT mean freedom to discriminate whenever you want in the course of your actions in your daily life.
Do you not see that you fit your own words – you only care about your own rights and not the rights of others? Is it “very immoral and evil” for someone to lose their job just because they are gay or lesbian? (still legal in 29 states)
Jack
Yes, hopefully Mainers will vote for same-sex marriage because they understand it is the right and moral thing to do. We should absolutely allow ALL Maine families the ability to protect the lives they build together and the children they raise together.
And I would not characterize one veto vote in 2009 as “consistently” being against gay marriage.
“Same-sex marriage” and “moral” don’t belong in the same sentence.
That’s funny, people said the same thing about interracial marriage.
hhhh
There is no morality in sodomy. It is unnatural if you wish to look at it from a scientific perspective and can not complete a family (no procreation capability). From a religious perspective, the Bible explicitly forbids homosexual behaviors and even says those who follow it condemn themselves to hell.
Hmm, funny bringing up the bible. Based on your name, I’m going to guess you are a woman.
“I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she must be
silent.” – 1 Timothy 2:12 So, if you are a woman, be silent as your holy book commands you.
Guessing by your statements I would say you are a man, so as a man I will tell you the Bible is very clear on homosexuality being an error against nature. God did not make you that way, you chose it if you are a homosexual. It is absurd that you should try to use the bible to stick up for you homosexual stance.
“For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompense of their error which was meet. ”
(Rom 1:26-27)
I actually don’t believe in the Bible, I was just pointing out the hypocrisy of a woman quoting the Bible, when the same book says that she must remain silent. And no, I did not choose to be a homosexual, as you put it. Just because you have no understanding about how sexuality and gender work, doesn’t mean that you get to judge it as a choice.
oh, because I am a heterosexual I “have no understanding about how sexuality and gender work? You’ve got that backwards. Your the one confused about sexuality.
Not because you are heterosexual, I base that observation by your comments. I am comfortable about my sexuality. I have had these feelings for as long as I can remember. I have come to terms with my sexual orientation. I am not confused about anything. I am in a loving, committed, long term relationship with my wonderful boyfriend. And if your God views the relationship of two consenting adults as “wrong” and that I should not have the same rights afforded to heterosexual couples, then screw your God.
It’s called temptation. A thing to resist. You made the choice no matter what you say is the reason. You are in a very darkened state and Only God can bring you out of that.Your a blasphemer against God and are in danger of judgement by Him. You should be thankful he is so patient with man. He sacrificed His own Son as a substitute for our sin, even while “we were yet enemies” to Him the Bible says. Romans 5:10. You do need to take advantage of that while there is time. One of those homosexual oriented diseases could get you and it will be too late if you die of one of them. Too bad you are so antagonistic against the very One who can help you. I find that most of the people who say they are unbelievers aren’t 100% sure there is no God they just are too worried to find out. They fear in the wrong way. They are turning from the only thing that can save them.”Him that comes to me I will in no wise cast out” Jesus said. He can save and change the vilest. I do not hate homosexuals. Most of the experience I have had in discussions with them though is that they have gone so far in justifying this immoral lifestyle that they cannot be convinced to see they are doing anything wrong. It’s called a seared conscience. It’s a bad state to be in.
If you are the type of person that is going to be in heaven, I have said it before and I’ll say it again, I’d rather go to hell. Your god is a jerk. I say to your god, bring it on.
If it’s temptation, then the desire is already there. It is something you’re born with, but you are saying that it is something that should be denied.
Well duh, it’s not like total sexual repression of natural desires could lead to negative effects. Oh wait…
oh, so when did you discover your heterosexuality, exactly, then ?
He doesn’t want to say he was born that way because he might be asked to prove it scientifically (like a genetic marker) and he can’t. He doesn’t want to directly say he chose it because he knows he didn’t – he just is and always has been.
Jack
Exactly.
So please do feel free to ask that question to all those who think those other peoples’ sexuality is of their own free choice.
Short form:
“So when, exactly, did you know you are straight ?”
No, it’s because of the numerous ignorant statements you’ve made on this forum about gays.
Are you new, by the way? Or are you someone who was on here with another handle?
By the way what of your “hypocrisy” to quote a book you don’t believe nor understand as a tool against those who do.
If religious people can’t even follow their own rules, then I have no reason to consider following them.
The Bible says far more in support of slavery than it says against homosexuality. Even Pat Robertson has stated that there are passages in the Bible which should be taken in context of the time they were written (such as when slavery was acceptable). If homosexuality were so wrong, why is it not mentioned in the 10 commandments OR by Jesus?
Because coming to that conclusion would require basic logic skills.
You seem pretty focused on sodomy… have a recent “oops” moment with hubby? So you made your point about the male side of homosexuality, so where do the lesbians fall? The guys get a worse hell because they are gay and practice sodomy and the women get a lesser hell because they are just gay? I understand Dante’s view of the levels of hell, but yours seem to differ. Basically you need to outline a map of hell. Like lesbians get hell, gay men get double hell, and pedo priests get what? double secret probation? C’mon spell it out for us.
— o —
I know. This baffles me why there are religious folk who fixate on what two people do in the privacy of their bedroom. And when they see a couple all they are thinking about is how they have sex.
/// @ \
Especially when they go on and on about sodomy. Cra-zy!
It is all about the sex part of it. If it wasn’t for that it wouldn’t be a problem. It’s a danger to society and a danger to those practicing it because there are natural consequences to this unnatural lifestyle. Associated among homosexuals. (Aids, colon cancer, hepatitis and other diseases) – very high among those practicing sodomy. Sad to say sometimes this spreads and infects innocent non-homosexual practicing people.
Gays = disease. Gays spread the disease to the unsuspecting straights.
I think you’ve watched this clip too many times: THE GAY MENACE http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yhaXh1UY7-4
AIDS, colon cancer, hepatitis and other diseases affect all human beings no matter their orientation, race, age, gender – diseases don’t discriminate.
Jack
But apparently religious freedom means that doctors, nurses, and anyone else should be free to do just that!
The Bible also states that eating shellfish or wearing a fabric woven from more than one type of thread is an abomination. I bet you have done both of those things.
I have found that most people who use the Bible to back up their bigoted positions have never actually read the book themselves. Judge not.
Sodomy is not exclusive to same-sex couples. I would be willing to bet that the majority of heterosexual married couples also engage in some form of sodomy – guess they will be condemned to hell too – but they aren’t denied marriage.
Jack
The bible is an irrelevant book of fairy tales. Please stick to reality.
If homosexuality is unnatural, please explain the thousands of documented instances of homosexual behavior in nonhuman animals.
Even in nature, there is homosexuality. Animals have been known to have homosexual sex, which goes to show it doesn’t go against nature. And why would you try to use nature as your soap box. Nature goes against EVERYTHING in the Bible.
Girl, you better send the bedroom police out to all our straight couples and married people because some of them are practicing sodomy too!
And, hey-I DON’T WANT KIDS! NOT NOW NOR NOT WHEN I AM MARRIED!!!! So stop with the “what about the children” nonsense already!!!
—–
“From a religious perspective, the Bible explicitly forbids homosexual behaviors and even says those who follow it condemn themselves to hell.”
Does anything in the US Constitution suggest that one is not free to do things that others think will send them to hell ?
Should it your opinion ?
Eating lobster is just one of those things that sort of resonates locally, I must think.
Why not?
I am in a wonderful monogamous relationship, and have been for decades. We support each other, volunteer in our community, give to charity, and we’re there for our neighbors when they need us (and they are there for us in turn). What is immoral about that?
I say that about “moral” and “Hollywood marriage”! Which, correct me if I am wrong, consists of straight people….
Gay marriage is NEVER moral. It is ashame that you would even think that. Gay marriage is sodomy and is very immoral. It is unnatural. And it is NOT in the best interest of children (who would not even be possible in a homosexual relationship–obviously they would have to be adopted or come from a previous heterosexual relationship). Children would suffer the most, as the ideal situation is a child to have both a father and a mother. ALL psychology points to the importance of a father and mother. It is against science, against religion and against morality to support gay marriage.
” ALL psychology points to the importance of a father and mother. ” – Nope, you get your own opinion, but you don’t get your own facts. Here are some studies that show otherwise.

All of this is your personal opinion, nothing more.
Treating ALL Mainers equally under our civil laws is absolutely moral.
If the very definition of marriage, as you suggest in using “sodomy marriage” is based on how couples have sex, then you have missed the boat on what marriage really is and do a disservice to those who marry for love, companionship and mutual support through thick and thin. I really feel sorry for you and your spouse (if you have one) if you only married to have society and god approve of your uncontrollable desire to engage in coitus.
Jack
But only during your fertile years and without contraception because sex for any other reason is immoral….what a joke.
Melora if you are so concerned about the children why aren’t you working to end single parent families, divorce, etc… Why focus only on homosexual couples that have children?
Well, all those things could potentially affect her. Besides, she doesn’t hate single parents, just gays and lesbians.
Actually, many children of same sex marriage are very well adjusted. Yet oddly many children raised in Christian homes commit hate crimes…
Coincidence?
So, two homosexuals in a loving relationship are worse then some trailer trash heterosexuals heading for a divorce? Interesting, tell me all about it.
Please.
You are simply exposing your fear in written words here.
Science does not a draw the conclusion that homosexuality is a worse environment then heterosexuality. At most it may point to some some issues that can be corrected – or will self correct once society stops treating homosexuality as second class. It’s like preventing a race from learning how to read then calling them stupid a few weeks before emancipation. Let’s allow homosexuals full equality then do some research.
As far as nature, it does not care and has no opinion. Really, stop pointing to it as something that can back up your argument as it doesn’t. Nature only cares about survival of the fittest as a method of advancement. Given that homosexuals have been around for more then one generation, apparently nature is producing them on its own.

But we know where the money is coming from don’t we. We are still waiting for NOM to release the names of donors from 2009!!
Consistently?
Well, maybe during only one election there was a slight majority of voters who voted to reject the law that allowed me to marry the person I love.
There were some polls in 2009 and 2010 that showed a majority of Mainers opposing SSM. But the polls consistently show otherwise now.
And, fortunately in Maine, the GOP-led drive to make it difficult for some of our citizens that just happen to vote blue failed. So, there will be a groundswell of young liberal voters turning out to vote this November during this presidential election.
But you’re right. Fear is a very powerful tool and Emrich and Schubert know exactly how to use that fear to manipulate the good people of Maine. They’ve done it before and they’ll try to do it again.
These recent articles are nothing more than propaganda by the SSM porponents to try and convince themselves and possible undecideds that they are going to win in November. The fact it this measure is going to fail just like it did before.
Do you include the articles about Schubert and Emrich and the columns by Heath and Emrich, or do you just accuse our side of manipulating the press?
Every once in a while, we get a rare reminder of why America is great; and when gay marriage passes in Maine, we will get one of those moments.
Really? Glad to see the only thing that can be brought up about this issue is money!
Money and that any relationship between legally consenting adults should have legal recognition by the government.
Then why has every recent article only mentioned money?
I guess you haven’t looked hard enough. Here is an article about same sex marriage where the sole focus is not money
http://www.khon2.com/news/local/story/Same-sex-marriage-issue-reviewed-by-federal-judge/o3-q0ZH-ekG9VFQ5i-xkVg.cspx
I was wondering the same thing.
Well, some of the articles that mention money are about the anti-SSM willful disobeying of Maine’s campaign finance laws. I think that that’s a pretty newsworthy topic.
I don’t recall any recent articles mentioning money except this one. The other recent articles have been regarding support from the business community, and “Republicans United for Marriage” giving their support.
Check the opinion pages. Really any other approach beyond money and numbers seems to get people screeching about this “liberal rag” and “mainstream media bias”.
Spruce didn’t say one word about money now did he? Guess you don’t have all that much common sense huh?
Actually, gay marriage will be one of the most destructive and evil things to come to this state (and any other). People may fool themselves about it but the consequences of it will be felt in all generations. We’ve already seen the discrimination against Christians from states where gay marriage is law (Christians losing their job because in good conscience they can not partake in or be a part of gay marriage–example, town employees or wedding business establishments, etc). It will always be immoral. Slavery was once legal as well but deep down, everyone knew it was wrong.
None of this is related to gay marriage. In 2005 we added sexual orientation to the same anti-discrimination laws that protect you for your choice of religious views.
There are many of a religious persuasion that believe marrying outside one’s religion is immoral – if a town employee refused to issue a marriage license based on the conscious clause (it goes against my religious beliefs) they would on the wrong side of the law. It is illegal to discriminate on the basis of religion and yes, they could be justifiably fired for breaking the law. This is the same situation as the Justice of the Peace who refused to marry an interracial couple because of his religious beliefs.
Jack
Your absolutely correct about Slavery. The rest of your drivel means little though, because you are advocating the very thing this country is trying to end, Discrimination. You say that if Gay marriage is allowed, discrimination will come to the Christians? Well how do you figure? Nobody in this group is expecting you to run your life or your business against your true beliefs. You will always have a minorty of people that thnk as you do. However if you are saying that because this is allowed that some of the gay people that are going to your churches, buying your products and using your services, may stop doing that because you come out AGAINST gay marriage, well isnt that to be expected?? I mean its kind of hypocritical to think you can have it both ways. I would never buy any product or use any service if i knew it was against Gay Marriage. Chik Fillet is finding that out the hard way, as their business plumets to the ground.
It amazes me that you would bring up the Slavery issue when in all honesty we are talking about much the SAME thing. A group of people have NOT been treated fairly, and most of America is about to make it right just as we did when the slaves were freed, when women were allowed to vote and many other instances where fairness wasnt found. We have righted our wrongs in the country….Hopefully some day the Catholic Church will realize this as well and start practicing some of what they preach and love all mankind, not just the ones they choose.
Your words..
(discrimination) “because you come out AGAINST gay marriage, well isnt that to be expected?? ”
(homosexuals) “A group of people have NOT been treated fairly”
Homosexuals already have ALL the rights we do. They are treated just as fairly. And as far as discrimination in society ‘what do you expect’ if your living a queer, perverted lifestyle of course people are going to think differently of you. You can chose to change and that’s what you need to do or live with it!
Your religion has murdered hundreds of millions of people. Anytime you feel like owning up to, apologizing for, and admitting how wrong you are for those killings, we will listen. Until you clean up your own yard, please keep your nose on your own side of the fence.
You have chosen one of 28,000-ish known gods throughout humanity. Those that came before you were wrong, you are wrong, and those that come after you will be wrong. Christians do not hold the patent on marriage, have no control over marriage in a civil society, and those religions that do perform a marriage ceremony need to be licensed by a civil authority to do so. Your religion is yours, have at it, but do not use your personal beliefs to deny others equality. If you don’t like it, too bad. We are a nation of free and equal peoples. Not a nation built by any of the 28,000 gods. If you want to live in a pure and christian place, rent a room in the Holy See.
All this judging must be making you tired! You need a hug!!!
Truth Test! Truth Test: Could same-sex marriage law threaten religious groups’ tax-exempt status? http://www.pressherald.com/news/could-same-sex-marriage-law-threaten-religious-groups-tax-exempt-status__2012-07-15.html?searchterm=same+sex+marriage
Yeah… because we all know the Bible condemns slavery…. oh wait…. it supports it…. multiple times…..
Epic Fail again
Melora,
“ In the name of the greatest people that have ever trod this earth, I draw the line in the dust and toss the gauntlet before the feet of tyranny, and I say segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever”
George Wallace
No, not everyone knew it was wrong. Many people did not and committed atrocities in the name of their belief that removing the rights of others was natural.
Just like you are doing now.

Nothing brings out the hate — from both sides — more than love..
I am one of those Mainers who have been contributing under $50! Glad to see so many of my neighbors are joining me to support this worthy cause.
It will be wonderful if Maine becomes the first state in our nation to extend marriage equality via popular vote!
As a heterosexual male,I’m proud to have supported MUM three times.Good luck to you and yours.
Obama believes in Gay marriage, and that should be enough to sway anyones vote.
Also thats alot of money, you think you can send 100 grand my way, that buys a sign on my lawn. Thanks.
Just a question, won’t voting yes put all the people working on this project out of work?
To answer your question— the overwhelming majority of people working to pass same-sex marriage in Maine are volunteers taking time away from their jobs to man phone banks, walk neighborhoods, and hold town hall meetings on their own time.
I’m sure we will find other good causes to volunteer for once we gain equal access to civil marriage. If you volunteer for charities, you’ll probably meet us!
Guest: who does not know that homosexuality is an attraction to the same sex–and that a “lesbian is a homosexual woman.” In any regard, the Master’s Plan is not for marriage between those of the same sexe, but for marriage between a man and a woman.
Are you talking about god? Guess what, in terms of law, your god doesn’t matter. If you are going to argue against same sex marriage, you are going to have to do better than that.
Religion… the greatest con ever perpetuated on mankind. If your god hates gay people so much, why did he give Freddie Mercury the voice of an angel?
Actually the religion of manmade global warming is the greatest con ever perpetuated on mankind.
It is true. In both Old and New Testament God is against homosexuality. He will never give His blessing to gay marriage. Only the devil will do that.
“I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she must be
silent.” – 1 Timothy 2:12 Why do you keep talking? Follow your holy book and be silent.
Many people do not have a need for any religious blessing to be married, it’s not needed.
=====
No…. “He” just blesses priests who molest young boys.
Good thing that God does not exist then…. Just need for the nation to catch up to the core principles of the Country that they live in.
-J
Maybe then it’s a good thing that this law is for CIVIL MARRIAGE that has nothing to do with any church if the participants don’t want it to.
There! Win-win for all!
God condemns rape, not love.
God has blessed my life to give me a partner with whom I am able to share a supportive, nurturing relationship. I don’t think our government has any justifiable reason to discriminate against us in regards to civil marriage.
I hope this November a majority of Mainers will agree with me.
” God” condemns rape? REALLY? What about the Menonite women who were “prizes of war?” [Numbers 31] What about the murders and rapes in Jabesh-gilead? [Judges 21] What about David’s wives (yes that’s plural) being raped because “God wills it” as punishment? [2 Samuel 12] Or selling your daughter as a sex slave? [Exodus 21] And this is only scratching the surface
I challenge any “faithful to read EVERY word of the Bible from front to back with NO skipping around. I think they will have their eyes open to how little “Love” is in the book.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHHA, I’m sorry, but too easy.
Gay marriage supporters are deceiving the public with their “Mainers United for Marriage” name. The title implies that one is saving marriage (as we know it) not approving gay marriage. The title should never have been approved. It should be called United for Sodomy Marriage. Now that would gain far less donations.
You do realize that straight couples engage in sodomy, right?
You do realize that it’s not the same right?
How is it not the same? Anal sex is anal sex, regardles of the participants.
That’s one opinion.
Another is that one of those options is a result of defective DNA.
Actually, my statement is not an opinion. Anal sex IS anal sex. The people participating in no way affect the definition of anal sex.
Technically, sodomy is any sexual act that is not missionary style intercourse. So this includes a wide variety of sexual practices that heterosexuals engage in.
So for now they go after the homosexuals… once they have us back in the closet, they’ll go after the sale of condoms and birth control…
True, although most people simply associate it with anal sex.
You’re wrong. We’re not all against birth control, condoms, or abortion. Why would we want to support someone’s unwanted mistakes for 20 years or more, and then start rehab for them? There are enough punks out there robbing pharmacies as it is.
You assume that everyone against you is a religious fanatic, and that assumption is what’s going to make you loose.
No… we can see the hatred you have for logic and reasoning. Where we use those things every day and also have the ability to use your own scripture (You know…. the parts you never mention in church because it shows how vile religion is) against you. Unlike you who can only twist facts and spew out incorrect information…..
Oh and what ever happened to judging is only to be done by “God.” Seems you people are trying to over-power “God’s” rights, therefor committing the UNFORGIVABLE sin of blasphemy….. The one sin that is a “Straight ticket to Hell with no possible hope of EVER getting into Heaven no matter how much good you do in life.” So if there is a Hell (Which I honestly do not feel there is) you would be the first in line. Make sure you bring some marshmallows
Again…you mistakenly assume that everyone against you believes in any god or religion.
None of your “ticket to hell” BS will work on me.
The religious fanatics are just icing on the cake.
Oh, so you just dislike gay people because they are gay. At least the the religious crowd has some twisted “logic” behind it. You just flat out want to discriminate against gay people for what? Do you get some sort of “fun” insulting gay people?
oops wrong person lol
So you do understand then?
That you are a homophobe? Yeah.
Oh so you are just a bigot then. You just base your opinion off of
Christian values, not scientific facts. That just makes you
unintelligent and ignorant.
OK “Swift” let me see if I follow your logic here…
Same sex marriage is “amoral” because if the “ick” factor even when the same “amoral” behavior is practiced by heterosexual couples (married and unmarried).
But abortion is “moral” because you don’t want to support unwanted children even when those “unwanted” children could find loving homes with same sex married couples because you can’t get beyond the “ick” factor.
Man that is some twisted logic you are using.
You’re arguing a straw man— I was not stereotyping the entire opposition, I was pointing out the subset that focus on the act of sodomy.
If you oppose gay marriage because of homosexual sex, why do you draw the line there and not all sexual activity not for the purpose of making babies? Honest question.
…crickets when we ask for honest discussion on the issue, eh?
As is oral sex, another form of sodomy. How many straight couples, married and unmarried, do that sort of thing?
It’s the same.
Right…whatever makes you try to feel normal.
Merriam-Webster defines Sodomy as – anal or oral copulation with a member of the same or opposite sex.
Do you know a different definition of sodomy?
Why does it matter anyway? Why do you care what other people do in their bedrooms? Sounds like you’re the pervert here.
Merriam-Webster defines Sodomy as – anal or oral copulation with a member of the same or opposite sex.
Do you know a different definition of sodomy?
We are Mainers, and we have united to bring marriage equality to Maine. I think the name is very accurate.
“Sodomy Marriage” is a loaded term opponents use to try and get people to focus on the private sex lives of others. That’s a petty, immoral tactic— and irrelevant, because far more heterosexuals engage in sodomy with their spouses than homosexuals do.
I used a term the other day for traditional marriage that was as crude as that term for SSM. I wonder if Melora would like that word used for her vision of how marriage should only be.
Protect Marriage supporters are right. Gay supporters have more money—many have pressured big business into approving of sodomy and the general public is unaware (ex. General Mills who makes cheerios and other foods is financially supporting gay marriage now but you won’t see gay couples slurping cereal down in their commercials). But those with decency and morals still realize what gay marriage is–destructive to the family unit, especially children who deserve both a father and a mother. Gay marriage will ALWAYS be immoral, unnatural and wrong. Just because some people wish to ignore their conscience and push for immoral laws does not make it right. Remember, slavery used to be legal, but everyone deep down knew it was wrong.
It’s funny you bring up slavery becuse the arguments that you are using were the same arguments to keep slavery. Companies are starting to support same sex marriage because the realize that more and more people also support same sex marriage. Also, if you are going to claim that “destructive to the family unit, especially children who deserve both a father and a mother”, you better be able to prove it.
P.S. You do realize that straight couples also engage in sodomy, right?
There is nothing immoral about two people who support and love one another, and have done so for decades.
Gay marriage is not destructive to the family unit at all. What is destructive is the judgmental, ostracizing attitude that makes gays and lesbians feel they must hide who they are to their friends, family, coworkers and community.
Gays and lesbians are raising children all over Maine, even without access to civil marriage. Offering these important protections is the right thing to do, so that ALL families may protect the lives they build together and the children they raise together.
Jeez, Melora, you’re all over this story, aren’t you . . . . You’ve used the word “sodomy” about 20 times (I’ve stopped counting); is there something about this word that thrills you? This is a secular issue, not a religious one. You are not supposed to be allowed to impose YOUR religious views on federal or state law. I’ll bet if you mind your own business, supporters of same sex marriage will mind theirs.
Actually it was the Christians who used the Bible to continue and support slavery, so… your argument is invalid. Of course the Christians have been wrong about everything anyway, but that is what you get when you build a religion out of other religions and outright lies.
And they’re descendants of the same crowd that screamed at the Monkey Trial in 1925.I’m glad Maine is the least religious state in the country. With passage of this law,Maine will be a beacon of light, truth, justice and fairness.Go MUM!
how’s this shoe fit?
ScienceDaily (Apr.
6, 2012) — Homophobia is more pronounced in individuals with
an unacknowledged attraction to the same sex and who grew up with
authoritarian parents who forbade such desires, a series of
psychology studies demonstrates.
The
study is the first to document the role that both parenting and
sexual orientation play in the formation of intense and visceral fear
of homosexuals, including self-reported homophobic attitudes,
discriminatory bias, implicit hostility towards gays, and endorsement
of anti-gay policies. Conducted by a team from the University of
Rochester, the University of Essex, England, and the University of
California in Santa Barbara, the research will be published the April
issue of the Journal
of Personality and Social Psychology.
“Individuals
who identify as straight but in psychological tests show a strong
attraction to the same sex may be threatened by gays and lesbians
because homosexuals remind them of similar tendencies within
themselves,” explains Netta Weinstein, a lecturer at the
University of Essex and the study’s lead author.
“In many
cases these are people who are at war with themselves and they are
turning this internal conflict outward,” adds co-author Richard
Ryan, professor of psychology at the University of Rochester who
helped direct the research.
The paper includes
four separate experiments, conducted in the United States and
Germany, with each study involving an average of 160 college
students. The findings provide new empirical evidence to support the
psychoanalytic theory that the fear, anxiety, and aversion that some
seemingly heterosexual people hold toward gays and lesbians can grow
out of their own repressed same-sex desires, Ryan says. The results
also support the more modern self-determination theory, developed by
Ryan and Edward Deci at the University of Rochester, which links
controlling parenting to poorer self-acceptance and difficulty
valuing oneself unconditionally.
The findings may
help to explain the personal dynamics behind some bullying and hate
crimes directed at gays and lesbians, the authors argue. Media
coverage of gay-related hate crimes suggests that attackers often
perceive some level of threat from homosexuals. People in denial
about their sexual orientation may lash out because gay targets
threaten and bring this internal conflict to the forefront, the
authors write.
The research also
sheds light on high profile cases in which anti-gay public figures
are caught engaging in same-sex sexual acts. The authors cite such
examples as Ted Haggard, the evangelical preacher who opposed gay
marriage but was exposed in a gay sex scandal in 2006, and Glenn
Murphy, Jr., former chairman of the Young Republican National
Federation and vocal opponent of gay marriage, who was accused of
sexually assaulting a 22-year-old man in 2007, as potentially
reflecting this dynamic.
Tell me please, how will gay couples being able to marry their partner in any way, destroy the family unit as you call it?
http://www.smbc-comics.com/index.php?db=comics&id=2608 – This is how.
Haha thanks for the chuckle!
If “The Sanctity of Marriage” is in such danger from homosexuals….. what are divorce lawyers? The Apocalypse?
….
“Christians losing their job because in good conscience they can not partake in or be a part of gay marriage” Guess what, if you don’t do your job, you get fired. If your job would require you to “partake” in a same sex marriage and your boss tells you to do so, if you say no, you get fired.
Many Christians are the biggest crybabies about discrimination that have ever been.Look at the ridiculous “conscience clauses”Those people need to be fired and people who are there to serve ALL of a business’s customers are then hired. If I were to refuse to serve a person of color,I’d be rightly fired and sued.Yet these prigs routinely violate others’ civil rights. with impunity.
I agree with most of what you said. I would just amend to say that MOST Christians are crybabies. I think that it is ironic that the people against SSM complain about special rights, yet they want the special right to discriminate.
Ehh, it’s not even most. There is a very vocal minority of fundamentalists who drown out the moderate middle in America.
For example, every Catholic I know personally is a decent person who has no problem with my homosexuality, and supports my right to civil marriage… but the established Catholic Church® seems myopically focused on this issue, probably to distract from the heinous scandal of sexual abuse they institutionally covered up for decades.
I think it is really telling of the disconnect between the average Catholic and the position of the higher ups in the Church when the Cardinals in the Vatican condemn US nuns for spending too much time helping the poor, sick, and needy and not enough time condemning other people.
Believe me the average nun is not spending time helping the poor, sick and needy the Catholic Church hires liberal social workers to do that.
Most nuns are liberal social workers!
Agreed and corrected.
I will not say all Christians are crybabies. in fact I know quite a few that fully support SSM. They realize the Bible has it’s faults and that science has shown a lot of what it says to be incorrect. They do embrace the “Love” factor the Bible is SUPPOSED to teach people, which allows them to understand LOVE is what marriage is about. it’s not about the sex of the person you are marrying.
ANYONE using religion as a soap box is just unintelligent when it comes to their religion. It’s sad that this Atheist knows more about Christianity than the majority of Christians…..
Christian bashing I guess is in vogue like homosexual marriage.
Christians put themselves on the firing line, just like Gov. LePage does and just like you do. If one makes questionable assertions, that person should expect to be called on it. “…the Catholic Church hires liberal social workers to do that.” “Liberal”? the Catholic Church? The nuns I’ve know are hard working care takers.
Most nuns are lesbian, bitter women. I know, I lived in a convent school during the early 70’s.
Hahaha! You ‘know’ because you “lived in a convent school during the 70’s.” Hahahaha. You just lost all credibility with me.
I guess you don’t believe that a student attending school in one of these institution has any credibility. I guess support homosexuals who prey upon youth?
A pedophile is not a homosexual. A pedophile is a predator who delights in control and power. Because a nun put the moves on you does not make ALL nuns pedophiles. Your are obviously angry and damaged. Don’t come on here spouting your hate. It is exactly the same as saying I was raped as a child, therefore ALL men are rapists. Get help. And no, just because you make a claim here does not mean I support anyone who preys upon a child. Your generalized hate is misdirected. You have issues. Resolve them and don’t put your anger onto me by accusing me of supporting pedophiles.
I’ve moved on, but you obviously like to try to manipulate people thinking they have issues. I had to laugh when I read your post back to me. And yes I do believe you make excuses for homosexuals who prey upon youth.
I think that was Melora’s point. Your “special” rights are going to take away some of our basic rights. And obviously by your statements, you don’t care if your “special” rights for a lifestyle you ‘chose’ will make the rest of us pay for it with the loss of our rights. There is nothing loving about the gay marriage movement. It’s all about self at the expense of others. You can choose not to be a homosexual unlike not being able to choose if you are black or red or disabled. The civil rights act was mainly to protect the rights of African Americans in the wake of the civil war. African Americans didn’t chose to be African Americans they were born that way. NO one is born gay. Being gay is something that can be helped and changed. We should not pay for those bad ‘choices’ with a law that effects everyone else!
Guess what, gay marriage or not, you get fired for NOT DOING YOUR JOB. If your beliefs prevent you from doing your job, you get fired. As for being able to “choose” not to be gay, science disagrees. Sexual orientation is an immutable characteristic. Also, the “help and change” you are referring to has actually been shown to be psychologically damaging. I never chose to be gay, did you choose to be straight?
I didn’t have to choose to be straight as it comes natural to everyone. You may have had some abnormal impression when you were very young but you were not born gay.
Not to me, and not to millions of Americans. I had a normal childhood. I was raised by my mother and my father. I went to church each Sunday. I had the stereotypical American childhood. Guess what? I’m still gay. I can’t change that. How about you try praying to turn me straight, see if that works out?
Nice. What about the un-abnormal people who are gay?
What “Special Rights” do you have that others shouldn’t? Homosexuality is NOT a choice…. someday you people will read a scientific journal…. oh wait, you can’t since it shows your Bible to be false……
You people think your “marriage” is so sacred. Fact is, you have NO RIGHT saying who can and can not be married. if so I am going to change the movement to make it so NO ONE can get married. I will use facts showing the increased divorce rate, domestic abuse, single parent homes and child abuse. This will make it so no one can get married or have children.
Sound a bit “insane?” Now you know how you sound……
BTW “God” isn’t real. Man created “God”
And that computer on your desk just ‘evolved’ into what it is. Started as a pile of wire and metal then grew a motherboard then a cpu and evolved to have memory and logic. Sound insane? Just as a computer is here because of an intelligent designer so man is here by an Intelligent Designer. And He made the woman for the man. That’s why Steve and John can’t produce a child, they weren’t made that way. There is nothing natural about homosexuality and God who made man and designed marriage says so. There are plenty of problems in heterosexual marriage but heterosexual marriage itself is not a problem.
A computer is not a naturally occurring item. As for intelligent design, I am reminded of a quote from Neil deGrasse Tyson “Down there, between our legs, it’s like an entertainment complex in the middle of a sewage system. Who designed that?”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=oEl9kVl6KPc
That is the video of NDT giving the speech.
1-maybe Steve and John don’t WANT a child. And the chances are that there won’t be one by accident, either.
2-sterile Steve and Betty can’t produce a child. Sterile Steve isn’t made that way.
3-God made me who I am.
4-Don’t have a homosexual marriage. I’ll have a homosexual marriage. Win-win for all!
If we can “choose” to be gay, then wouldn’t that mean that it’s already in our nature? Or are you saying that those who “choose” to be gay choose to go wholly against their natural ways? And by that “choosing,” they opt for a life of discrimination, prejudice, and hate. What a great “choice”!
How is your religious freedom being restricted? As far as I can tell, legalizing same sex marriage will not interfere with your ability to worship your god of choice. As for people losing their jobs, yes, if you don’t do your job, you get fired. That’s how things work if you didn’t know that already.
C’mon Quequeeg, step out of the stone age and embrace knowledge and fact rather than a philosophy built on the foundation of guess work, fear of death, and ignorance. Seriously, you are following a creed written by men who honestly believed every breed of animal on the planet was within walking distance of Noah’s house.
It is not civil rights. This is a moral issue. Sodomy is immoral and always has been.
Acutally, sodomy is quite fun. As they say, “Don’t knock it till you try it”.
Civil marriage is absolutely a civil right, per our US Supreme Court on many rulings.
Your myopic focus on certain kinds of sexual intercourse is sad; you stand so opposed to the happiness of people you don’t even know.
It is about equal rights.
Even for heterosexual married couples – right? There’s a bunch of them on the direct path to hell.
Jack
And, legalized for everyone by SCOTUS in Lawrence v. Texas.
Quequeeg, your attitudes, much like your writing style, are right out of the eighteenth century. You do know how to build a sentence, albeit a misguided one!
Really, your offensive hate does more to show people how just and right our cause is than anything.
Equating our struggle for equal treatment under the law with pedophiles stalking children? Really, your mind is a filthy cesspool of misguided fantasy.
This special interest group has big money. We will see in November what that big money buys.
Gay marriage or sodomy is against the natural law. Every person knows deep down what is right and wrong–that is natural law. Murder and incest, for example, are not rights and go against the natural law. But there have been times in society where people have declared incest or even murder were “rights” but deep down we know they are wrong.
Biologically, same-sex couples are not meant for genital relations. They are not meant to procreate or carry on the family line. It is also immoral from a spiritual level.
Our culture may wish to spread propaganda to rationalize gay marriage but it will never change the truth of the matter. It is based on feelings, not what is right. And statistically, those in homosexual marriages (where they are already legal) do not last as long as heterosexual marriages. Plus children that are adopted or forced into these families suffer tremendously. They intentionally are denied either a father or a mother.
Homosexual relations are condemned in both Old and New Testament:
book of Leviticus: “You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it
is an abomination. . . . If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both
of them have committed an abomination..”
New Testament:
Paul warns that homosexual behavior is one of the sins that will
deprive one of heaven: “Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit
the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral
nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual
offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor
swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God” (1 Cor. 6:9—10, NIV
“I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man;[a] she must be quiet. ” – 1 Timothy 2:12
To equate the loving, supportive relationships that wish to enter into civil marriage with murder is ridiculously hateful hyperbole.
Get a grip. You come across exactly the same as those racist southerners when interracial marriage was legal only in some US states.
Since our country’s inception there have been groups that have seen the promise of our Constitution, and petitioned our society for equal rights, access to government, and legal protections. And all along the way there have been people predicting doom and gloom and national destruction if we extend these things to one more group, race, sex, or other minority.
And every time they have failed, and every time our nation has failed to self-destruct. This is just the next way in which our constitution is fulfilling its promise to ALL Americans.
It’s more telling of you as a person that what you get from the the bible is a message of hate and intolerance.
1 John 4:7 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God.
Seems to me like love is something more important than hating each other.
*YAWN*
In case you missed the memo the State of Maine issues marriage licenses. Once issued the couple may choose a Justice of the Peace (called a CIVIL ceremony) or a Man/Woman of the Cloth (called a RELIGIOUS ceremony).
No religion “owns” the word marriage for their use and their use alone.
Leviticus? Really? You want to go there?

“Murder and incest, for example, are not rights and go against the

Ok… so murder is wrong…. yet in “Christianity” you seem to forget the following: Spanish Inquisition, Salem Witch Trials and The Crusades. ALL in the name of Christianity.
As for incest…. according to Christian Doctrine, we came to be OUT of incest. Think about it…. Only “Adam and Eve” were created. From them came children…. so who did these children have sex with to make the next generation?
Stop forcing your religion down the throats of people intelligent enough to say we don’t have answers, but will look for them….. instead of claiming “Magic.” You all claim “God created something from nothing” but wouldn’t “God” have to have come from nothing in order for that to happen? If so then you have just admitted there is no “God.”
You are simply hiding behind religion to seem like you are not a prejudice bigot. Religion is the most immoral idea in the world. Grow up and stop believing in fairy tales. And if you want to claim your Bible is true….. why are you talking? By the name I assume you are female, so you have no right to speak according to Christian Doctrine.
move to a deep south state when the law passes this fall-you won’t be missed–
Look at all those states.Near the bottom in health, education, wages and every other thing that benefits all of its citizens. But they’re wasting their time in church every Sunday.
“I stood looking at him a moment. For all his tattooings he was on the whole a clean, comely looking cannibal. What’s all this fuss I have been making about, thought I to myself – the man’s a human being just as I am: he has just as much reason to fear me, as I have to be afraid of him. Better sleep with a sober cannibal than a drunken Christian.”
Ishmael-In Moby Dick—better change your posting name
…
I see you have been improving your vocabulary Queq…doesn’t change the stereotyping you engage in.
These reports lead me to think that the anti-SSM side is hiding their donations. I mean, really, the reports have only a few lines!
Wouldn’t be the first time they broke our laws and used lies to win.
When the antis play by the rules and do things honestly, that will be the first time.
While I am Christian (I believe in Christ) I am also bi-sexual. I do believe in the physical attraction to the same sex, but I don’t support gay marriage and it has nothing to do with my religious preferences. I also think it would be discrimination based on religion if someone got fired due to exercising their beliefs. In a society where church and state are supposed to be separated, how is it legal for churches to donate money to a government type project such as this? Perhaps Churches should mind their own business when it comes to supporting any questions for the voters. They have the right to discriminate who enters their religion and place of worship, but they should not be allowed to say what happens to or within any other domain in this state. Period!!!
Discrimination laws already exist— since 2005 in Maine. The ballot question that was submitted explicitly exempts anyone from having to perform a same sex marriage ceremony or signing a civil marriage license, so this is a good law to support by your views.
If the mere existence of same sex civil marriage infringes on religious views, then the current discrimination also infringes on religious views— for there are churches across Maine that want to marry same sex couples in their congregations!
Thank You MaBear for the reasoned well thoughtout comment. There are far too many people who claim ss marriage is a “right” when the people haven’t voted yet. If the people vote for ssm, then the ssm advocates can claim that right. (And does being bi really double your chances of scoring??)
Marriage is a right, according to the Supreme Court. In Loving v. Virginia, 1967, they ruled that “Marriage is one of the “basic civil rights of man,” fundamental to our very existence and survival”. Being a right, it is protected by the 14th Amendment, for ALL Americans, not just straight Americans. As a right, it should not even be voted on.
Well, the people in Maine HAVE voted on this before, so I’m not sure what that’s about.
As for rights, I really don’t think that something becomes a “right” only when people vote it in as law. Do you really believe that?
Libsux, you’re more than welcome! :) Some people are critizing my point of view based on some of my other responses I’ve posted to this subject as if I don’t know about SS relationships or their desire to get married. I simply disagree with SS marriages. That is MY RIGHT regardless of my sexuality and religion. Too often people claim rights or violation of rights before they’re even aware of any laws surrounding their specific issue. I see it happen quite often actually. (And yes, I like to think it gives me better odds at having fun if I choose to… at least when I’m single like I am now! Haha!) ;)
Why do you think the antis called it the Special Rights PAC?Anything to mislead and shake down the simpletons so the new Gulfstream could get bought for the big boys.
So, they can easily buy the election. What’s the problem.
So when is NOM going to release the names of donors from 2009?
To Melora: I have read many of your posts on this and have to disagree. No where in the Bible does it say how marriage took place. It simply says Adam took Eve for his wife. Joseph took Mary for his wife. Any ceremony is manmade. The piece of paper I have from the government doesn’t make me married in the eyes of God, it makes me married in the eyes of the government. We have no right to discriminate because someone chooses to live a life we do not agree with. Our laws are suppose to be free from religion. Plus the Bible that I have read tells me not to judge, God will do that. And as many times as you have stated the children should have a mother and father, I guess, you believe that the state should take all kids away from single parents and place them in foster care as “we all know children do much better in a household with a mother and a father”. It’s like the Chik-A-Filet guys statement that included his comment about being married to his “first” wife that I also took offense too as I am wife number 2. Does this make us not married in God’s eyes as far as you are concerned? Does this make us bad parents? Is our relationship wrong in your eyes as well? I have had people tell me this and I don’t buy it any more than I buy the bullcrap you keep posting.
Beware Maine Voters—beware a slew of last minute “Oops-too-late -to-report-the source -of-the-funds-before-election-day” influx of out of state PAC money for the Anti-SS marriage crowd, just as they did last time, paying for scurrilous, bigoted newspaper and TV ads…
You read it here first, in the pages of the BDN…
Wanna bet they will try to steal this election, last minute, without chance of a proper, logical, reasoned response….? They are afraid of logical and reasoned, and would rather hit us with gut, rabid emotion, not a good basis for voting.
