ORRINGTON – Daniel John Stevens, 87, husband of Mary (Weymouth)Stevens, died peacefully Aug. 3, 2012, at a Bangor health care facility. He was born March 18, 1925, in Orono, son of Sanford and Josephine (Boucher) Stevens. Daniel grew up in Orono attending St. Mary’s Catholic School. Soon after graduating in 1943, he enlisted in the Navy. He served with the 29th and 111th SeaBee Battalions in both the Atlantic Campaign with the Invasion of Normandy and the Pacific Theater at the end of World War II. He received the following awards: World War II Victory Medal, European Campaign Medal – one battle star, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal – 4 battle stars, Philippine Liberation Medal and American Campaign Medal. On June 21, 1948, Dan married Mary Darilyn Weymouth, in Orono. He worked 37 years at Dow Air Force Base with Federal Aviation Administration. He also worked with Orono Police Department in 1950. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved hunting, fishing and playing cards. He was a member of Knights of Columbus and American Legion Post No. 0084, as well as Veterans of Foreign Wars. Surviving, in addition to his wife of 64 years, Mary Darilyn (Weymouth) Stevens, are their eight children, Carrie Stevens and husband, Hugh Opie, of Quincy, Mass., Mark and Norma Stevens of Orrington, Jeffrey Stevens and fiancee, Wanda Sheehan, of Whiting, Mary and Alvin Newman of Campobello, New Brunswick, Joel and Richice Stevens of Burnham, Aaron and fiancee, Terri Hodges, of Bangor, Margaret Stevens of Ithaca, N.Y., and Julia Stevens of Weymouth, Mass.; and one brother, Norman Stevens of Orono. He is known as “Bumpa” to his 15 grandchildren, Amy, Katy, Danielle, Jeffrey, Cale, Sam, Treena, Nick, Jonathan, Jesse, Ian, Alisha, Micah, Courtney, and Daniel; and nine great-grandchildren, Kade, Gracey, Garrett, Rianna, Anleigh, Emery, Jack, Jade and Callum. He was predeceased by his sisters, Margaret Oliver, Jeanette Stover and Teresa Titchnell. He was a hard worker that sacrificed much for his family. He had a big laugh, strong opinion and colored vocabulary. He loved his children and grandchildren and they loved him back. He influenced many lives in various ways and will be sorely missed by all that knew him. The family thanks the staff at Maine Veterans Home, Bangor, for their outstanding care. Family and friends may visit 5-7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 6, at Kiley & Foley Funeral Service, 69 State St., Brewer. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 7, at St. Paul the Apostle Parish, St. Teresa’s Catholic Church, South Main St., Brewer.
