PORTLAND, Maine — Police are looking for a man who lit a firework and tossed it into a parked vehicle on Cumberland Avenue in July.

Portland police Detective Brian Letarte said the incident occurred around 1:45 a.m. July 17.

One of the empty vehicle’s rear windows was open, Letarte said, giving the suspect an easy target for the firework.

“It was a five-shot Roman candle,” Letarte said. “Surprisingly [the car] wasn’t torched beyond our recognition.”

The vehicle sustained damage to the rear seats and floor mats, Letarte said. It is currently at a repair shop.

Police say the suspect is a white male, and he got away in what appeared on surveillance video to be a Volkswagen Jetta or a Honda Civic.

“Because of the glare from the headlights, we cannot make out or narrow down the make of the car or get the license plate,” Letarte said.

Anyone with information on this case is asked to contact Portland police at 874-8533.

  1. I wonder why it took them so long to get the word out that they are looking for this individual. It happened about 3 weeks ago.

I hope they find the individual responsible, and are able to prosecute him.

    1. If he had tossed that device into an open apartment window and killed a dozen people in a huge building fire we all would have known about this sooner. It will happen right off or down the road. As our Governor says, “Maine is open for business.”-which includes the sale of dangerous fireworks.

      1. I feel like responding could easily turn into a “gun’s don’t kill people” type argument, so I will just say I disagree.

        1. I would love to think that the majority of Maine citizens could use fire works in a safe manner. Pick up a safety pamphlet from one of the fireworks stores and see if you think that average person out there is doing it right.

          1. I lack confidence that the average person could properly operate a toaster let alone many ounces of explosives.

          2. If you remember two kids in Portland stuck sparklers in a toaster and almost burned down a huge apartment building

    2.  Probably because he didn’t file an initial police report, he probably did it after his insurance company said they would only pay the repair cost if he filed a police report.  I’ve had that happen to me before when someone keyed my car and had to file a report.
