BANGOR, Maine — A Monroe family police have said ran a sophisticated marijuana-growing operation in their Monroe garage was indicted Friday by a federal grand jury on drug and gun charges. All four members of the Ford family are scheduled to be arraigned Sept. 26 in back-to-back hearings.

James F. Ford and his wife, Darlene Ford, both 57 of Monroe, and their two sons, James T. Ford, 35, of Monroe and Paul Ford, 32, of Swanville, were arrested in November and charged in Waldo County Superior Court after agents with the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency raided the family’s Swan Lake Avenue garage where they allegedly grew hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of marijuana.

The three men were indicted for conspiracy to manufacture 100 or more marijuana plants and manufacturing 100 marijuana plants or more. The parents were indicted for maintaining a drug-involved place. In addition to being indicted on the drug charges, James F. Ford and James T. Ford were indicted on one count each of being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition. Darlene Ford was indicted for aiding and abetting her husband in possessing a firearm and ammunition.

The indictment also calls for the parents to forfeit the property where the growing operation was located.

The Fords are scheduled to be arraigned Sept. 26 in back-to-back hearings at federal court in Bangor.

“It was top-of-the-line everything,” Jim Pease of the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency said of the operation in November. “It was a very high-tech, very sophisticated, very neat grow. It was very clean, very organized, much like you would think of a computer lab. A real still environment. That’s what this was.”

He described the parents as “businesspeople,” according to a previously published report.

During the raid, police seized over 300 marijuana plants, in various stages of growth, 10 pounds of processed marijuana and two semiautomatic assault weapons. According to Pease, the potential street value of the marijuana found in the home was more than $800,000. He said in November that the parents were suspected of harvesting about 20 pounds of marijuana every three months and shipping it to Massachusetts.

It’s reportedly not the first time the family had opted to cultivate marijuana. James T. Ford was convicted in 2002 for growing marijuana inside his home in Weymouth, Mass., and spent two years in prison for the crime, Pease said.

Agents believe the family has been growing marijuana in Maine for four or five years, he said, and built the Swan Lake Avenue home in 2005 in order to do that. The garage had nothing in it except a workbench, where guns were built, and grow rooms, he said.

The growing operation consisted of a hydration system to water the plants and growing lights, according to a press release from the Maine State Police. Pease estimated the growing equipment was valued at $80,000 and said some of the plants were 6 feet tall and ready for harvest.

The parents lived above the garage in an apartment.

If convicted on the conspiracy and manufacturing charges, James F. Ford and his son, James T. Ford, face a minimum of 10 years and a maximum of life in federal prison due to their previous drug convictions and a fine of up to $8 million. Each man faces up to 10 years on the gun charge and a fine of up to $250,000 on the gun charge.

Paul Ford faces a minimum of five years and up to 40 years in prison and a fine of up to $5 million his drug charges. Darlene Ford and her husband face up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $500,000 on the charge of maintaining a drug-involved place. She also faces up to 10 years and a fine of up to $250,000 on the gun charge.

If convicted, the state charges most likely would be dismissed.

  1. Ridiculous, I don’t want to pay for their incarceration. These are the sorts of people who would be successful if prohibition was ended and they were allowed to run an “above-ground” business. LEGALIZE!

        1. Don’t forget the poppy comes from a seed too. Still thinking the same on that one? Just curious.

Edit: Can’t forget coca is a seed too. Same question. I’m sure I’m forgetting some others but it’s all the same.

          1. Sure. Poppy in its natural fresh picked state (like marijuana) is usefull. Heroin and opium don’t grow on trees, they are processed. Alcohol is plant based too. Should we ban grain????

          2. Those Poppy Seeds that come on all sorts of things (Bagels and Breads are a good example) are actually Opium Poppy Seeds, which contain small amounts of Morphine… just so you know…

I could probably kill myself by slicing my wrist open with a Rose stem, should Floral Arrangements containing them be illegal?

          3. It is only what evil people do  with God’ gifts to man that is evil..

Weed, poppy seeds  like on a  bagels or sugarcane are all natural unless someone turns them into a dangerous white power that might cause diabetes or other similar addictions , right ?

Remember what made New England wealthy, tall pine into fine capital ships and  the trade of  Bibles and timber into  rum..and timber and rum into slaves and home to Savannah and then to  Boston with “clean” fresh American  bales of cotton and tobacco.

Give weed an even break against Allen’s  Coffee  Brandy and the slave trade..

            That’s all we are saying.
            Give peace a chance.

          4. Diabetes is a genetic disease that impacts the body’s ability to synthesize glucose into the red blood cells.  Has nothing to do with weed, poppy or other natural substances.  Get a clue before you post something stupid like this comment.  Good grief man –

          5. I’ll take NIDA’s interpretation of the damage caused by using Pot.
“HC is up to no good in the brain. THC finds brain cells, or neurons, with specific kinds of receptors called cannabinoid receptors and binds to them.
“Certain parts of the brain have high concentrations of cannabinoid receptors. These areas are the hippocampus, the cerebellum, the basal ganglia, and the cerebral cortex. The functions that these brain areas control are the ones most affected by marijuana.”

          1. So you want everyone to be free to do what ever they want? You have to have laws in a society to govern people.  If not you would have a Anarchy of which  there are few historical success and as of today none exits.

          2. ” So you want everyone to be free to do what ever they want?”

IN AMERICA ?  NOT YEAH..BUT HELL YEAH !.

What is your problem with that and individual freedom ?

Why do you think everyone’s should be limited to  what you say is right,  Bubba ?

Have you never been  wrong ?

          3. I’ve been wrong before and at least I can admit it. Everyone in this Country is limited by are laws including you, Catfish!

          4. Laws are supposed to protect the public. Senseless laws only make $ for the states to use in a way that usually doesnt improve or benefit the public. All that this bust does for the public is make it harder to get good grass locally. It also eliminates $ that the family was spending in town. And also a waste they probably locked up or will throw away all the growing equipment. That could have been used to grow FOOD in the winter here in maine.

          5. So stopping someone from growing  and selling marijuana to teenagers, that then get behind the wheel of 2000 lb car and drive on public roads is a senseless law……Good grass is illegal except for medical marijuana and all that property seized will probably  be sold at auctions and monies will go into the State coffers.  I’d like to bid on some of that ill gotten  property myself and grow me some  tomatoes this winter. Yum Yum

          6. “So stopping someone from growing  and selling marijuana to teenagers, that then get behind the wheel of 2000 lb car and drive on public roads is a senseless law.”

            Oh.my.god.think.of.the.children!

As long as government is perceived as working for the benefit of children, the people happily will endure almost any curtailment of liberty.

    1. So you missed this part of the article:  James F. Ford and James T. Ford were indicted on one count each of being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition.

I will be more than happy to have my tax dollars pay for their incarceration.

      1. But they are marijuana felons (ridiculous) :  “James T. Ford was convicted in 2002 for growing marijuana inside his
home in Weymouth, Mass., and spent two years in prison for the crime”
Pot growers with guns vs. street dealers with guns is apples to oranges, different reasons for possessing them.

          1.  Man I’m really sick of your comments. I’ve been watching you spew garbage from your fingertips for too long. You want reality? I’ll prove to you that your mother is right with you at all times. Go record yourself in a quiet place on your phone or whatever and ask the emptiness around you simple questions only you and your mother would know and leave a pause after each one. Then I’ll filter it live over the web for you. I’m not psychic. I am an athiest as well but I know there is life after this and I can prove it. Something is telling me you need to alter your perception of reality

          2. You can PROVE there is a life after this one? AND you call yourself an Atheist? Now this is a story I absolutely must hear.

Please, indulge me, if only on the “existence” after death. Forgive me if I am skeptical. See, I haven’t died yet. I don’t know what happens, but, I am awfully curious.

          3.  I can prove that someone will answer on a recording… and a whole bunch of others. I was under the impression that an athiest doesnt believe in a god. I do not believe in a god. I know there is something answering questions when I record.

          4. heres my email t159159 gmail. email me and we’ll set up a live stream for tomorrow night. send me an email and ill give you some insight on what I do

          5. They said that just to bring out your happy personality.
Government made a fortune off stealing people’s homes and cars and drugs whats the difference?

    2. It’s very easy to say that.  I actually agree that it should be legalized and have felt that way for a very long time.  However, the bottom line is that it is NOT legal at this time and they broke the law.  You could say the same about any other drug out there.  We have laws in place so that people cannot sell this stuff to our kids and lead them to other more dangerous and addictive drugs.  I know so many addicts that started with the innocent pot/weed/ganga.  I know they wish they could go back to those days.  As for paying for their incarceration, what difference does it make?  We are gonna pay for them through state benefits if they dont grow weed and through jailing them because they do…works out about the same way.

    3.  15 more States to go and we’ll all have 2/3s State demand.  Since the Government works for us it’s our responsibility to incite education and legislation among our leaders.  It is also our “responsibility” to excuse from public office those who do not vote in the best interest of their people.

    4. agreed….1st comment was eschewed by management due to pot shot at current governor who indeed holds a summer home in Florida…..plants  ??  dandelions ??  the word Massachusetts ??   Indeed , spend money and resources on domestic issues, and violence,  and let Massachusetts fend for themselves…..find ayla….instead of screwing around…

    5. I just read the article about the brew master at bear brew pub in Orono … he was talking about all the different brews and the taste and how he makes all his beer…….what no body knows is some one who drank his beer could have killed someone driving , gone home beat there wife up or abuse there kids …alcohol ruins life’s ….pot cannabis marijuana does none of those things it helps life there are so many awesome beautiful cannabis strains out there that god gave us legal growers are way better for life then Brewmeister”zymology” ….. everything is so backwards

    6. I guess I shouldn’t have to obey the speed limit either, since I’m a good driver and am in a hurry?
Thankfully for most of us, it’ doesn’t work that way. You’ll pay, just like the rest of us and these criminals will be behind bars again.

  2. While murderers and rapists get off with a slap on the wrist.  Pharmaceutical companies and doctors ruin more lives in a year than marijuana will in the history of mankind. Marijuana has, and always will be here. We can either reap the many medical and economical benefits of this herb, or we can waste tax dollars prosecuting and incarcerating non- violent and otherwise law abiding citizens.  Time to WAKE UP people. LEGALIZE IT

        1. Healthier than bathsalts. Wow I’ll sleep better knowing that. Must be a wonder drug that the science and the medical field hasn’t found yet. Maybe you ought to write them a letter and let them know.

          1. If it’s not legal at the State level in Maine, California etc.. why is it that we now have approximately 8 dispensaries selling all kinds of marijuana in bud form, tincture and several different food items????????  California has dispensaries around many a corner that are run just like any corporate company(except with more compassion). Also many people here in Maine are able to grow their own and many times other peoples plants.
Sorry but marijuana is most always used in it’s pure state (buds) when things like opium & poppy seeds when processed look nothing like the plant form. I believe there are many medicinal plants out there that were put here to help people.

          2. Marijuana is illegal under Federal law. You know the Federal Government can shut them down. It’s happening right now in California not only by the Feds but also by the State. You know there’s more pot shops in LA  than MacDonald s, that’s compassion for ya. A Doctor can’t write you a prescription for Medical Marijuana so on your way home from the dispensary if  you happen to get stopped oh well tell it to the judge, because I don’t think a note from your Doctor is gonna fly with a Trooper or a Border Patrol agent. I can see it now a craigslist ad selling a Doctors note for Medical Marijuana. Ever heard of Marinal

          3.  which is completely wrong since the constitution states that the States rights are supposed to over ride the Federal Government, the original intent was for the Feds to work for the States, somewhere along the way it got twisted…

          4. Federal Laws are the “floor” upon which State Laws are built. A State may choose to do MORE tham the Federal Law requires, but they can not do LESS.

          5. ” A State may choose to do MORE tham the Federal Law requires, but they can not do LESS.”

That is incorrect. A state cannot be compelled to enforce federal laws.

          6. That is whats happening in California,  the Fed is shutting down store front dispensary’s by going after the property owners which are not licensed to dispense Marijuana.   Could happen in Maine  say someone rents a home and wants to grow their own the property owner is liable. Same with Federal subsided housing not allowed.

          7. Really well I will tell you exactly what happened when I was pulled over with someone with a prescription for Medical Marijuana. The state trooper asked if the person had a prescription (which he did) and the officer said “Wow alot of people say they have it but they can’t produce their card, I’m glad you keep it on you.”
I do not smoke marijuana but have seen the amazing effect it has had on people with cancer, eating or stomach problems and many more. So get your facts straight. Yes I have heard of Marinol because I am a Registered Nurse. I have also seen it work a little with some patients and not at all with others. I am from Maine not California.
I hope you’re not trying to tell me that McDonalds is some great and healthy place to eat. I’d rather see them shut down. Sorry but that’s my opinion followed up with facts.

          8. Some was intended as sarcasm.  Remember it’s not a prescription and the State issues a id card Their primary Doctor needs to be kept in the loop instead of doctor shopping. MacDonald s was a bit of humor. Do some reading on whats going on in California The Feds are cracking down along with the State. Good read.

          9. I’d be totally open to reading about what’s happening in California, wish you put a link up. I’m very open minded and don’t think everyone needs Medical Marijuana but I do know that for certain people and diagnosis’s it helps a great deal. I am for my patients not having to be in pain or end up on Narcotics (that they end up addicted to). If you’re from Maine I assume you know of the severe problem of opiate addiction.

          10. http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/06/14/e us-usa-marijuana-landlords-idUSBRE85D0JA20120614 Why I comment on these drug issues is because I’ve seen what Marijuana and all the opiate drugs are doing to our society. Seen it in my own family at work and saw it when I was in the Military. Peoples lives ruin and even death all over drug use. I believe Marijuana is a gate way drug for our youth and we are reminded of it everyday by just reading the news papers.

          11. It is illegal for the feds to overrule a state. How long will the American people put up with the feds doing as they please?

        1. It’s illegal in every Country on the planet. Plain and simple Google it.  Homer go buy some and take it into any police station in the U. S. and show them what you just bought and let me know how that works out for you.

          1. Still not legalized.
In Peru, the traditional use of the coca leaf is an ancestral practice which has never been criminalized. In the country there is a scheme of licenses under state control, known as the registry, for the cultivation of coca leaves and their distribution through the National Coca Company.
However, while in Peruvian laws consumption or possession of controlled substances for personal use is not punishable, it is estimated that 60 percent of detentions on drug charges are related to use or simple possession. Moreover, the penalties for drug related crimes are relatively high and disproportionate, and infringe upon fundamental rights such as freedom, due process and other judicial guarantees. The penalty for small scale sales of drugs is between one to eight years in prison, according to the Criminal Code.
Domestic Law Most of the criminal legislation on illicit drug trafficking could be found in articles 296 to 303 of the 1991 Criminal Code. In the past years, legislation has been modified to increase penalties.

          2. Why are you relating Coca to Marijuana? Possession of pot for personal use is not criminal in Peru. Also, the government of Uruguay is considering selling it to its own citizens to help pay for their war on hard drugs and organized crime. Possession has NEVER been criminalized in Uruguay and there are no laws against its use. So, if you can smoke it and the government is considering selling it, its legal.

          3. At the recommendation of a national commission charged with addressing Portugal’s drug problem, jail time was replaced with the offer of therapy. The argument was that the fear of prison drives addicts underground and that incarceration is more expensive than treatment — so why not give drug addicts health services instead? Under Portugal’s new regime, people “found guilty of possessing ” small amounts of drugs are sent to a panel consisting of a psychologist, social worker and legal adviser for appropriate treatment (which may be refused without criminal punishment), instead of jail. It’s decriminalized not legalized. Thanks for playing.

          4. How can you say that “Marijuana is not a drug” and use the term “Medical Marijuana” in the same discussion? THC is a drug. You may be able to argue that it is not harmful and is beneficial; but you can’t say that it is not a drug.

          1. State law can’t trump federal law is what SCOTUS has ruled. The problem I have with that is I don’t think states should have laws that apply only if the feds decline to prosecute.

        1. Been to Amsterdam and other places in Europe. Not a troll just playing devil advocates  ” with heavy sarcasm ” The people of Maine “me included’ voted for Medical Marijuana out of compassion for sick people that may have their lives improved by this drug.  Now we have people on here spouting that’s marijuana is legal in Maine and it’s the greatest thing since sliced bread and everyone ought to be able to grow and sell it.

    1. Did you read the article? James F. Ford and James T. Ford were indicted on one count each of being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition.

Both of them are convicted felons but you think they are such upstanding law abiding citizens.

      1. Perhaps you should consider why they are Felon’s? Its clearly from the previous Marijuana arrest. Do you think that making people into Felon’s over a plant (which has never killed a single user) is logical?

        1. I guess they didn’t learn from there first experience that a plant that never killed anyone is a illegal drug in the U. S..

          1. We have the rule of law in this Country. You can’t pick which laws you wish to obey based on your moral beliefs, but if you wish to and are caught you’ll suffer. I don’t believe they were growing that much dope because of their moral convictions. HUH!

          2. They have rule of law in most Countries. Some of them which are in fact a lot better of a place to live then America (in terms of crime, healthcare, education, etc) and many of those have determined that Marijuana is basically harmless and even useful. They are continually softening up Marijuana laws in many of the most well to do countries on the planet.

        2. Until you change the law they are felons. You would have to repeal the law that makes the stuff illegal  first. But as far as I can tell; the original intent of the Marijuana Tax Act of 1937 was to require persons to pay a tax on it and never really intended to make it a crime to have it in the first place.

          1. You need to go back in history Sylasdog. The liquid extract in the 1850 of marijuana was listed as a drug. Then regulations started on our pharmaceutics industries.  As a result of these regulations marijuana extract was listed as a poison. By 1930 all States had regulations concerning marijuana use. The Act you refer to made possession or transport of cannabis through out the U.S. illegal under Federal law, except for medical or industrial use of cannabis, in which there was a expensive excise tax was required.

          2. Which is very funny, they were handing out cocaine to people like candy until about 1840-ish give or take and even Coke (the soda) had it in it originally.
Now the soda has cancer causing chemicals in it instead but thats not listed as posion. But sometime within the next 3 or so years they (also Pepsi) have to change that as does Johnson’s baby lotions and oils and other products like Aveeno. FYI Johnsons hasn’t been able to sell these products out of the country for 10 or more years because of the cancer causing chemicals( the scent they put in it just like perfumes). They had to change the recipe for out of the country sales, but not here in the U.S. and yet the government is bent on marijauna.

      2. How did you get the Ford dudes  out of that post, cause I don’t see them mentioned  at all.
You should smoke some pot, you’d be more relaxed, have happier thoughts and cheerful posts and wouldn’t read things that aren’t there.
The government makes lots of money off pot, we get to pay the bills that they generate from their income , don’t  you think there’s something wrong with that picture?

          1. up to 15 years with all but 6 suspended for MURDER of a defenseless child is a little different than Paul Ford’s minumum of 5 and up to 40, FORTY years for growing a plant. I’d think the
$5 million dollars fine and maybe a couple years would suffice, and even that’s ridiculous in the @ss backwards society we live in

  3. it is a real money maker. someone was scorned to tip off the cops. when you have a business like that got to make sure everyone involved is happy.

  4. Legalize it.

Oh. But that would shut down half the privatized prisons in the country and put tens of thousands of people out of work.

Who makes money when it is illegal?

Cops. Judges. Lawyers. Prison guards. Every single business that services a prison: food, telephone, laundry — the list is endless. You might have read that the telephone company sticks it to prisoners wicked.

I read somewhere that no country has locked up such a large percentage of the population since Stalin died.

Locking up people is one of the most lucrative business in the United States. We understand that Cheney had stock in prisons and if he didn’t know how to make money, no one did.

If you’ll compare us with other countries there is no doubt but what when it comes to putting people in jail we are a world leader.

    The humble Farmer

    1. Were the 3rd largest Country by population, out done by China and India. China has a different penal system than the U.S..  They have re-education labor camps for people that don’t conform to decriminalized laws such as drug use. You don’t want to know about  India’s penal system, they can stay in prison for years just awaiting  a trial. India has a prison population of 3.75 million, but they were built to house 2.5 million. We have the rule of law in this Country and it’s the best system of any Country. If we have a  law in this Country that seems unjust we have a legal system that allows us to address that and have them changed. The leading factor for higher prison population is length of prison terms and our “tough on crime policy” which lowered our crime rates. Maine has the lowest incarceration rate of all the States.

      1. “Were the 3rd largest Country by population, out done by China and India.”

        per Wikipedia:
The incarceration rate in the United States of America is the highest in the world. As of 2009, the incarceration ratewas 743 per 100,000 of national population (0.743%).[2] In comparison, Russia had the second highest, at 577 per 100,000… The incarceration rate of the People’s Republic of China varies depending on sources and measures. According to the ICPS, the rate for only sentenced prisoners is 120 per 100,000 (as of 2009) and the rate for prisoners including those in administrative detention and pre-trial detainees is 186 per 100,000 (as of 2009).[2] Su Jiang assessed the incarceration rate for all forms of imprisonment in China at 218 prisoners per 100,000 population.[18] The total number of prisoners held, 1.6 million, is second to that of the United States despite its population being over four times larger.

        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_incarceration_rate

        1. I saw the 1.6 million in prison in China. Then there’s another 1.3 million in re-education camps and then another 260,000 thousand in labor camps. Just recently they started what they call dark prison but no numbers. 2011 report but I cant find my link. Just remember we put people in prison for a lot more reason than some Country’s do and longer terms which drives up the rates.
          http://factsanddetails.com/china.php?itemid=1646 found a the link

    2. “The United States has less than 5 percent of the world’s population. But it has almost a quarter of the world’s prisoners.”

“Americans are locked up for crimes — from writing bad checks to using drugs — that would rarely produce prison sentences in other countries. And in particular they are kept incarcerated far longer than prisoners in other nations.”

      — Because there is a lot of money to be made by keeping them in there. No time off for good behavior is good for the bottom line and has nothing to do with rehabilitation or punishment.

      The humble Farmer

  5. Let see a well maintained family business, pumping large amounts of business and cash into the local economy, because of their care and hard work  and they are busted and stand lose there property for being successful business people running a profitable small farming enterprise. I bet they were not taking any government subsidies, either. [Grin] Yep sounds perfectly logical to me. They forgot to buy their local politicians, a bad business choice. Rule number one in conducting an illegal business is grease the hands of the local politicians and police force. It is practically a grand old American tradition dating back to pre-Revolutionary times. I am sure the Mexican drug cartel  follows that rule religiously which is why only the small producers get busted. Meanwhile back to my Lipton Tea for my caffeine fix.

  6. I have a question? Were they manufacturing firearms?
Describing the garage the article says”The garage had nothing in it except a workbench, where guns were built”. How many firearms were found and how were they built without machine tools?
The article also refers to “manufacturing” the marijuana, not growing it or processing it. This is an agricultural product. right?

    1. “The article also refers to “manufacturing” the marijuana, not growing it or processing it. This is an agricultural product.”

Manufacturing cannabis is cultivating and processing for sale.

  7. I don’t use it but my thoughts are just legalize it, control it, tax it & get on to more harmful drug issues.

    1. “I don’t use it but my thoughts are just legalize it, control it, tax it & get on to more harmful drug issues. ”

My thoughts are just legalize, control and tax all drugs and move onto more harmful issues. Prohibition causes more problems than drug use.

  8. These people are convicted felons committing more felonies by drug trafficking and subsequently breaking federal firearms laws. Stop the garbage on here that these are somehow a middle class family running a “small business”. And all the people trying to “legalize” weed – yeah a bunch of free dope is really going to get America back on track. Marijuana has been proven to cause brain damage and paranoia – and it’s clearly evident by it’s biggest advocates who kick and scream for legalization and could care less what negative effects marijuana has on people – or our culture as a whole. People become understandably angry about substance abuse and DUI’s – but many callously blow off the fact that many Mainers drive under the influence of prescription and nonprescription drugs every day. Legalize weed and build more methadone clinics – that’s the liberal solution for economic turmoil in Maine. No quick fix can replace the fact the success in life at anything requires hard work and a sober demeanor.

    1. “Marijuana has been proven to cause brain damage and paranoia”

There was a study that linked cannabis to brain damage. They obtained the results by strapping a gas mask on a monkey then pumping nothing but smoke through the mask for periods of 15-20 minutes. The same results would be obtained using smoke from any source because asphyxiation causes brain damage.

Some cannabis does cause paranoia, particularly in inexperienced users.

    2. Yeah, I’ll jump on this, as well…

Marijuana does NOT cause brain damage. At all. That is completely untrue. Its a lie.

That claim was born many decades ago when government researchers strapped gas masks to monkeys. They were testing the effects of long term cannabis use. However, instead of administering  small repeated doses over a long period of time, they instead pumped massive volumes of smoke into the mask, to simulate long term usage. In essence, what they did was suffocated the monkeys. Of course, they then took this result and said “look, brain damage!”. Well, any time you suffocate, your brain cells are going to die. It wasnt marijuana that killed their brain cells. It was government people with an agenda.  It took 30 years for information on how this study was done to finally be released.  Also in 1980 an independent report was published that said that Mice which were subjected to 100 times a human sized dose of THC showed absolutely no signs of any brain damage. Marijuana has no negative effect on human culture. At all. The human mind comes pre-wired with Cannabinoid receptors, and even creates its own natural cannabinoids. Thats how involved it has been in our species, we have actually evolved and adapted to make better use of it. Smoking pot can be harmful because of the properties of smoke, not because of any pharmacological reasons.

As far as paranoia goes, some people certainly do get paranoid after smoking it. Although, I would argue some people get paranoid after drinking milk, too. Are they paranoid because of the milk, or because their simply, paranoid?

Have you ever smoked weed? Because if you haven’t Id suggest you in fact can know little of it, Epistemologically speaking.

And now back to your regularly scheduled brainwashing…

      1. There have been over 20,000 studies done on marijuana and there is still no reasons to legalize it. Smoking anything is not healthy for your body and is the poorest delivery systems for any drug. The THC in pot has shown no medical use other than the  “high” you get from smoking which impairs you to function at your normal  capacity.

        1. Completely wrong.

I could spend the time here, trying to convince you otherwise, but it is clear having read through all these comments that your opinion is well-formed, despite the flawed nature of the “facts” you cling to.

There are lots of reasons to legalize it. Plenty of people use Marijuana in ways aside from smoking. The Cannabinoids in pot (its more then just THC) have shown great medical value. Impairs you… you know, coffee impairs you? It changes how the chemicals in your brain work and that is what you define as “impairment”. Sugar, too.

Your basically dying of cancer. The pills and drugs they are giving you are making you extremely ill. You cant eat and are constantly nauseous. However, smoking a couple hits of Marijuana changes that and greatly improves the quality of your life. You can eat and are happy. How is that not beneficial?

Keep ignoring the truth. You and Skowheganresident (a bit father down) should get together. Might be a good time.

    3. “Legalize weed and build more methadone clinics – that’s the liberal solution for economic turmoil in Maine. ”

No, it’s the rational solution to irrational laws. We’ve been putting people in prison for drug possession for nearly a century. Assessing the current situation, i note that illegal drugs are cheaper, stronger and more available than before we started the incarceration policy. As a result of the “lock ’em up” approach America – the Home of the Free – has become the world’s largest prison nation!Twelve step programs define insanity as “repeating the same action over and over while expecting different results”.  Are you insane?

    4. It’s interesting that you feel this is a liberal problem as no children of conservatives ever have visited drug rehabs correct?

  9. Recommendation 11of the Global Commission’s Report on Drug policy:

“Act urgently: the war on drugs has failed, and policies need to change now.

There are signs of inertia in the drug policy debate in some parts of the world, as policymakers understand that the current policies and strategies are failing but do not know what to do instead. There is a temptation to avoid the issue. This is an abdication of policy responsibility- for every year we continue with the current approach, billions of dollars are wasted on ineffective programs, millions of citizens are sent to prison unnecessarily, millions more suffer from the drug dependence of loved ones who cannot access health and social care services, and hundreds of thousands of people die form preventable overdoses and diseases contracted through unsafe drug use.

There are other approaches that have been proven to tackle these problems that countries can pursue now. Getting drug policy right is not a matter for theoretical or intellectual debate- it is one of the key policy changes of our time.”

  10. If Governor Gary Johnson gets enough votes to derail either of the drug warriors running for President, we might make some headway on ending this madness.

  11. Yay! Another auction coming up! Snowmobiles, ATVs, bearskin rugs, Hummers! Flat-panel TVs! Hav-a-Hart traps galore! Scanners!

  12. Cannabis narcs = cops who don’t have the balls or the integrity to chase down real and dangerous criminals. MDEA goon Jim Pease is just another thieving killing parasite sucking off the taxpayer while pretending he’s going after a real drug menace. Talk about a burden upon society! Karma will catch up with his kind.

      1. I liked your comment because it made me laugh. You are aware aren’t you that some of the finest minds in the world smoked/smoke dope? Unlike pharmaceuticals, in which case you must take five drugs to offset the side effects of the first, pot does not seem to cause any long term effect on IQ. I am not saying that someone who smokes large amounts everyday my not have some negative affects, but those have been shown to be more related to “lifestyle” than using the drug.

Oh and for those of you quoting “studies” that say pot causes testicular cancer, or lowers IQ…follow the money. I think you would be kind of suprised who payed for those studies. Oh, and the cancer one has pretty much been debunked because the scientific method was not in evidence. The researchers found something (maybe) they could not account for and made a leap, a great big giant guess, based on what they wanted to find and called it evidence. It does not work that way.

        1. You get to chose one of two doctors to do heart surgery on you, one heart doctor smokes POT, one heart doctor does not. Which would would you chose knowing only that information?

      2. You obviously don’t approve of cannabis and don’t use it, right? So what’s your excuse for being dumbed down?

  13. Just saying…
A young man just got 7 years after killing his baby
We have a dirt bag that was a bus driver for SPECIAL NEEDS children facing 15 yrs
Tiger Springer, raped and old lady in Dunky a few years ago, getting out in a few years
and many other POS’s that should have done life or paid with their lives.

I dont think a pot manufacturer, that is probably a felon for a pot related issue is our biggest worry

    Just saying

    1. Unfortunately, there are only so many beds available in our prisons today. With mandatory minimum sentencing for drug crimes it allows those who commit non drug crimes to be released early to make more room…I believe treatment for drug users versus incarceration is a better and less expensive option in the long run. It would also save room for those committing violent crimes to stay in prison (and off of our streets) longer.

    1. It was dismissed from state court to go to federal court, probably because Maine’s forfeiture laws do not allow the seizure of real estate for cannabis violations.

  14.  The tide is turning against the dumb  folks look- a case decided yesterday in Belknap County
illustrates the importance of the nullification power it
recognizes. A jury unanimously acquitted Doug Darrell, a
59-year-old Rastafarian charged with marijuana cultivation, after
his lawyer, Mark Sisti, argued that a conviction would be unjust in
light of the fact that Darrell was growing cannabis for his own
religious and medicinal use. More remarkably, Judge James O’Neill
instructed the jury that “even if you find that the State has
proven each and every element of the offense charged beyond a
reasonable doubt, you may still find the defendant not guilty if
you have a conscientious feeling that a not guilty verdict would be
a fair result in this case.”

  15. I’m curious if any of the posters here knew the family.  If their entire source of income was coming from illegal pot manufacturing and distribution, then on paper, they wouldn’t have had any income.  I wonder if they were receiving and state or federal benefits because technically, they would have been defined as living in poverty.

    1. Believe it or not, there is a large subculture of people who shun government services out there making a very good living from cannabis and paying their own way through life.

      1. And I bet there’s an even larger subculture out there that takes government services and then makes a cash living on the side, whether it be selling cannabis, their children’s ritalin, their own suboxone or methadone prescriptions, their food stamp cards, etc.

  16. Punishment for having marijuana:

Singapore—Anyone caught with at least 17 ounces of marijuana, or half an ounce of cocaine or heroin will be treated as a drug trafficker, and drug traffickers get hanged.

Malaysia–a mandatory death penalty is meted against anyone caught with seven ounces of marijuana

      1. Singapore is well known throughout the world for a country where people can safely walk thier neighborhood streets at night, —even, in, the,..cities.

      1. Singapore is well known throughout the world for a country where people can safely walk thier neighborhood streets at night, —even, in, the,..cities.

  17. So wrong That these folks have the chance of life in prison and or huge fines, in the MILLIONS. they are not dealing with “real” drugs, they arent deserving of any harrasent by LE. Give me a break. Pretty disapointing

  18. “Smoking pot linked to testicular cancer risk”
    Published September 10, 2012…..MyHealthNewsDaily

“Huffington Post-Sep 10, 2012Kids who are dependent on marijuana or use it persistently before they’re 18 experience an irreversible,IQ drop

  19. I’m  s-o-o-o sick of this kind of CRAP!   The war on drugs is over . . and the government has lost!

Stop putting people in jail for growing, smoking or sharing weed.   Instead . .legalize it . .control it  . . tax the snot out of it . . use hemp for everything from clothing to paper!!

The U.S. policy re: weed is draconian!

    STOP IT!!!

  20. Yes, I agree, so the Fords did not get enough money to pay to be a dispensary, maybe that is what they were working on.  If the Fords can do it out of their garage, they poured money into their community, electric, water ??? Way to go, I am sorry, they got caught, and more sorry my taxdollars are paying the police, court system, and the jails. There are so many more real BAD guys out there, that our taxdollars could pay for to put into jail. They had guns, well of course, the story did not mention that one officer was hurt. Or even the guns were used. The Fords were just trying to start a business, the govt is just mad cause they did not get to control it.

  21. How silly can we get…Prohibition has never worked…Marijuana continues to be the largest cash crop in California and Florida…Legalize it and tax like tobacco and booze….And let’s not forget the US govt’s involvement in drugs over the years. CIA used to transport drugs via Air America to raise money to carry on the “secret” war in Laos….It’s all there in the history books..

  22. Pot is a lot less harmful than the oxys kids are doing, prescribed by our doctors and profited from by our revered business leaders.  Use the tax money to fight the most dangerous drugs.

  23. Commenters here can write all they want about how harmless pot is, how it should be legalized and taxed, how irrational the drug laws are, how much it will cost to imprison these people, etc. etc, but the thing that stands out about this case is the sheer stupidity of the Fords for exposing themselves to such enormous criminal liability.  This isn’t a rinky-dink Maine state court case where the prosecutor and defense counsel make a sweetheart deal and the judge rubber stamps it.  This case is in federal court, and federal prosecutors and judges take these things seriously.

  24. We disfellowship anyone with any dealings with marijuana in my church. We keep ourselves clean of the filth of the world.

    1. I’m not a religious man but does God and Jesus not love the sinners and the “filth” of the world as well as the seemingly Holier than tho people as yourself?
“The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, `Look, a gluttonous man and a winebibber, a friend of tax collectors and sinners! Matthew 11:19

  25. “Family allegedly found with sophisticated marijuana growing operation facing federal charges” ??? Was the author trying to imply the police may be lying about finding the grow operation? I’d say they’re alleged grower/dealers but the find and bust was fact.

        1. No, I didn’t. You can catch someone doing something red-handed, but it doesn’t mean they’ve been proven guilty.

  26. Everybody wants a little extra in life. Go police, bust a growing operation, but you cant spend any time busting pill addicts, which by the way, is taking over the state of Maine. It’s more common to see Rite Aid robbery than a moose in this state. You rock police, go you!

  27. The National Institute for Drug Abuse states:

“Research clearly demonstrates that marijuana has the potential to cause problems in daily life or make a person’s existing problems worse. In one study, heavy marijuana abusers reported that the drug impaired several important measures of life achievement, including physical and mental health, cognitive abilities, social life, and career status.9 Several studies associate workers’ marijuana smoking with increased absences, tardiness, accidents, workers’ compensation claims, and job turnover. ”
