GRAY, Maine — Police are dealing with as many as 20 accidents following Maine’s first snowstorm of the season.
A few of the accidents are serious, according to a dispatcher for the Maine State Police barracks in Gray, but most of the accidents in Cumberland and Penobscot counties are simply cars sliding off the road, according to the Cumberland County and Penobscot County sheriff’s offices.
The National Weather Service estimated the state saw between 2 and 4 inches, mostly south of the Millinocket.
Many Southern Maine schools and a few Central Maine RSUs delayed the start of their day by one or two hours, but few organizations outside of the state’s Head Start programs canceled due to the storm.

It’s a snowstorm. We live in Maine. We see this every year. How can people not remember how to drive when the weather gets bad. Plus, we knew it was coming to begin with, so why are so many people being stupid when it comes to driving? I have no clue. It’s called taking your time and leaving a little earlier then planned to get were one needs to be. Not to hard.
Despite the snow on the streets in Porkland, the texting while driving goes on and on…
Yes, people need to for the conditions.
Why? Because “Common Sense” has been bred out of the human species.
These must be the same people who get so excited when the spring comes that they cause the first flurry of warm weather accidents. Maybe after 3 strikes they should have to drive around in a horse and buggy.
Accidents? If people would slow down a lot more they wouldn’t have this problem. Also school delays for 2″ of snow? OMG!!!! They are getting soft.
Getting soft in a society with an obesity epidemic, say it aint so Bunky
Considering the number of idiots driving too fast for the weather conditions, I don’t blame them. Better the idiots run themselves off the road than ram into a bus full of kids.
Sleeting in Gorham this morning. Already? :-/
Do you not remember last year’s snowstorm on Halloween?
Common Sense is a lost art
Wow by looking at this article you would think Maine has never had snow before! The fools will continue being careless on slippery roads, the school systems turn into whimps Before you know it on the next storm with 2 inches of snow Police will drive by your house, signs will post advising you of a mandatory evacuation order.
I got up and left extra early just so I could beat the snow rattled zombies.
lmao!! you can sure pick out the ones from away,, aye?
I think you mean “crashes”, not “accidents”.
Driving too fast for the road conditions is a conscious choice, not some freak occurrence.
Honestly!!!
Must be Global Warming. Who would have ever thought of snow in Maine in November?
The other poster was right, although i have been posting it for 10 years.
‘Accidents’ are an act of god and or unpreventable,if one does not believe in god’
In 1991-ish, the NTHSA pronounced they will discard “accident” for the term ‘crash’. Many media outlets in the country immediately started using ‘crash’ for ‘accident’. Slowly but surely,’crash’ is replacing ‘accident’ up here in Maine.
Now, is it a accident,ie unpreventable, when a vehicle slips on icy roads? No. Say a part of route 95 had 10 vehicles go off the road. How come the hundreds if not thousands of other vehicles that drove on that same part of route 95 at the same time.same conditions,, but did not go off the road? Vehicles that go off the road because of ice and or snow, are the fault of drivers. Preventable. They are crashes not accidents.
Slow down, buckle up, and stay off the phone. Especially in slippery conditions. Pretty simple, really.
So many drivers are in way to much of a hurry to get to their destination. They need to relax and enjoy the ride. Two of my pet peeves in bad weather-Drivers following others to closely, (which causes multi-vehicle pile-ups) and idiots who don’t clear the snow off their cars (all of it, not just the windows but clear snow off the roof, hood and trunk too).
