LAMOINE – Capt. Clifton “Clif” Raymond Smith, 79, died Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2013, at MDI Hospital with his family at his side. He was born May 29, 1934, in Waterbury, Conn., the son of Howard A. and Ruth (Schelin) Smith.
Clif grew up in Milton, Mass., and graduated from Milton High School in 1952. He graduated from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in 1956 and married the love of his life, Janice Hokanson, of Weymouth, Mass. Clif’s first duty station was a weather ship out of Portland. Clif had a lifelong love of sailing that he shared with Jan. Clif retired after over 29 years in the Coast Guard ending with the change of command as Commander, Coast Guard Group Southwest Harbor Maine, Nov. 1981. During his career, Clif earned a Masters Degree from U. Conn., and after retiring, earned a Masters Degree from UMO in Education. Clif taught at Ellsworth High School.
He is survived his wife of 57 years, Janice; his children, Carl E. Smith and wife, Kathy, of Germantown, Md., Sherry Rogers of Lamoine, Kristina Hodkiewicz and husband, John, of Lamoine, and Brian H. Smith of Bedford, N.H.; seven grandchildren, Jessica, Casie, Lauren, Kelsey and Linnea, Colby, Mackenzie and their mother, Victoria (Weymouth) Smith; two brothers, Roger Smith and wife, Patricia, of Foxboro, Mass., and Kenneth Smith and wife, Sally, of Lamoine; sister-in-law, Claire Smith of Portland; cousins, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Howard and Ruth Smith of Milton, Mass.; and brother, Stephen Smith of Portland.
Friends are invited to visit with the family 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 13, at Jordon-Fernald,113 Franklin St., Ellsworth, where a Celebration of Life will be held 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 14. Interment will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery, Lamoine.
