OLD TOWN, Maine — A distraught Old Town High School student with special needs grabbed a butter knife Thursday morning but did not pose a threat to others, Superintendent David Walker said.
“She wasn’t threatening anybody but herself,” the superintendent said.
Walker did not go into detail about the girl’s circumstances, but he did say staff quickly got her to put down the knife she picked up from the life skills classroom.
Police were called to the high school at 10:51 a.m., but the 17-year-old girl was safely in the custody of school staff by the time officers arrived, Old Town police Capt. Kyle Smart said.
“Basically, the school handled everything the way they were supposed to,” Smart said. “The officers told me the staff had her under control, and her mom was even on scene.”
Smart said he did not know whether the girl was injured, but she was transported from the school by ambulance, he said.
