Yarmouth and Cape Elizabeth came away victorious during Saturday’s state championship volleyball matches at two sites.
Yarmouth claimed the Class B championship with a three-set victory over Machias at Ellsworth High School, while Cape Elizabeth annexed the Class A crown with a five-set win against Falmouth at Biddeford High School.
The top-seeded Clippers successfully defended their Class B championship by sweeping Machias in three sets, 25-9, 25-20 and 25-17.
Yarmouth (15-1) successfully overcame the loss of nine seniors off the 2013 title squad and finished the season on a roll. Coach Jim Senecal’s team was victorious in 15 consecutive matches, culminating in the championship.
Machias, the No. 2 seed, closed out the season at 14-3. Coach Kelly Woodward’s team earned its first trip to the state championship despite having only seven players on the squad.
At Biddeford, Cape Elizabeth took home its first gold volleyball, rallying to edge defending state champion Falmouth in a five-set thriller.
The fifth-seeded Capers (15-2) dropped the first two sets to the No. 3 Yachtsmen (13-4) by scores of 25-20 and 25-18. However, coach Sarah Boeckel’s team responded to win games three and four, both by scores of 25-22.
Cape Elizabeth then won the tiebreaker 15-8 to secure the program’s first championship.
