Santa’s Workshop

BANGOR — The Hammond Street Senior Center’s Craft Group invites the public in to join it on the second floor in what was formerly the group’s craft room. The room has been transformed into the winter wonderland that is Santa’s Workshop where  homemade crafts and white elephant items are available for purchase. Proceeds will benefit the center.

The workshop will be open 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays through December.

BANGOR — With the bustle of the holiday season upon us, the Bangor Public Library is helping navigate the sometimes confusing techno-world. The library’s reference department will host an informational session to provide the community with what they need to know:

• Tech Petting Zoo, 2-4 p.m. or 6-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 19. Best Buy will be at Bangor Public Library so participants can ask the Geek Squad and sales staff about electronic devices for adults, children or for teens. Participants will see a range of devices to fit every budget, including iPads, Kindle Fire and Android tablets, cell phones, ereaders and a tablet suitable for children. Learn how to stream television programs and movies to a television. See how to enjoy online music and videos from a tablet, computer or cell phone on your TV with chromecast, Roku or an AppleTV. Learn how to hook a cell phone up to speakers.

Cattle-handling

BANGOR — A low-stress cattle-handling demonstration will be held 2-4 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5, at East Ridge Stable, 405 East Ridge Road, Charleston.

Curt Pate, National Cattlemen’s Beef Association stockman instructor, will conduct the free, live demonstration, which is co-sponsored by the Maine Beef Producers Association and University of Maine Cooperative Extension. The demonstration is a prelude to the 25th annual Beef Conference 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, at Ramada Inn, 357 Odlin Road, Bangor.

Health seminar

BANGOR — Community members experiencing symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis are invited to attend an Eastern Maine Medical Center educational seminar at 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21, at the Spectacular Event Center. The event will focus on rheumatoid arthritis symptoms and highlight the advanced treatments available.

Registration is required for free seminar, which includes a light dinner served at 5:30 p.m. A question and answer session will complete the evening.

Christmas fair

HAMPDEN — The Hampden Historical Society will host its annual fair, An Old Hampden Christmas, 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, at the Kinsley House, 83 Main Road South.

The fair will feature hand made Christmas decorations, hand crafted items including mittens, old Hampden photos, a white elephant room and a bake sale.

Artwalk

GARDINER — Artwalk Gardiner will celebrate its 10th season 5:30-8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5, in downtown Gardiner. The Artwalk will feature the work of dozens of area artists offering paintings, drawings, sculpture, photography, fine art prints, jewelry, pottery, artist’s books, textiles and other handcrafted items available for sale purchase. Children’s activities, live seasonal music and free refreshments will round out the festivities.

Wilson Hall fundraiser

ORLAND — An art gallery cocktail party to benefit the restoration of the historic Wilson Hall building in Bucksport into a cultural arts center will take place 7-9:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, at the Orland Community Center, 21 School House Road.

The event will featuring Maine artists, a cash bar, silent auction, food and live music. Tickets are $25, and available at The Local Variety & Bake Shop, Daffodils and BookStacks in Bucksport, and at the door.

Student music recital

ORONO — The Maine Music Teachers Association will present a student recital to benefit the Bangor Area Homeless Shelter at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, at the Church of Universal Fellowship.

The association is a nonprofit organization of music teachers dedicated to serving music teachers, music students and communities.

‘Classical Kings’ concert

ORONO — The Bangor Symphony Orchestra’s 2014-15 season will continue at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 23, at the Collins Center for the Arts, with “Classical Kings,” a program of works by Mozart and Beethoven led by Music Director and Conductor Lucas Richman.

The concert will begin with two works by Mozart, the Overture to Don Giovanni and the Piano Concerto No. 12 in A Major, K414, which will feature pianist Daniel Shapiro as soloist. Shapiro is widely recognized as a leading interpreter of Mozart and an instructor at the prestigious Cleveland Institute of Music. His trip to Maine will include a visit to Bowdoin College on Friday, Nov. 21, where he will work with piano students. Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 in A Major, Op. 92, featured in the popular film “The King’s Speech,” will close the program.

“Classical Kings” is sponsored by Husson University, a longtime partner of the Bangor Symphony Orchestra. Daniel Shapiro’s appearance is sponsored by Hilda Hutchins McCollum and Billy and Gloria Miller.

A pre-concert talk will be held at 2 p.m. Tickets range from $19 to $45 and are available at bangorsymphony.org or by phone at 800-622-TIXX. Student tickets are available for $13.

Civil War book

PORTLAND — Maine Historical Society announced recently the publication of its newest book, “Maine In The Civil War: A Bibliographic Guide, 2nd Edition,” complied by Jamie Kingman Rice and William B. Jordan.

“Maine In The Civil War” is a comprehensive bibliography of published works reflecting the state’s participation in the War of the Rebellion, as well as the impact of the war on Maine. It includes an exhaustive list of printed works such as biographies, compilations, specialized studies and regimental histories. Originally published in 1976, the second edition includes works published in the last 30 years, as well as items not appearing in the original publication.

Historian William B. Jordan compiled the first edition as part of the Maine Historical Society’s Maine History Bibliographic Guide Series (1973-1985). The second edition, compiled by Jamie Kingman Rice, director of library services at the society’s Brown Research Library builds on the original work, with plans to offer an electronic version to enhance the usability of the bibliography.

Maine Historical Society, 489 Congress St., Portland, has been publishing material since 1831. In addition to the society’s more recent book publications such as “A Maine Prodigy: The Life and Adventures of Elise Fellows White, published in 2011, the society publishes the journal, Maine History, in partnership with the University of Maine Orono, as well as collections based exhibit essays online through Maine Memory Network (mainememory.net) for more than 260 other organizations across the state.
