AUGUSTA, Maine — Two schools, including Cony High School, were briefly locked down Wednesday afternoon due to a report of a suspicious man.

Augusta Deputy Chief Jared Mills said in a statement Cony High and the Farrington School were affected. The area was searched by Augusta police and a canine unit from the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office, but the man was not located.

The suspicious man was witnessed by children in the woods, and due to the nature of the man’s alleged behavior, the schools were locked down while police searched the area.

Mills said in a second statement at 1:30 p.m. that the schools were no longer locked down. No injuries were reported.

The man police were searching for was described as wearing dark clothing, but no other description was available.

Anyone with more information should contact Augusta police Officer Donnie Whitten at 626-2370 ext. 5015.
