SACO, Maine — Local police are warning residents to be aware of potential scams after a woman reported Friday afternoon to receiving a phone call asking for a donation to benefit two New York City police officers recently killed in the line of duty.

Saco Deputy Chief Jeffrey Holland said police were alerted to the situation shortly after noon.

Fearing the call was a scam, the woman contacted police so that other citizens could be warned in order to prevent it, Holland said.

Friday’s reported scam comes on the heels of a donation scam reported in mid-December asking for donations for a Saco Fire Department fundraiser.

Anyone who receives a similar phone call should immediately contact police. Unsolicited emails and texts should be immediately deleted, and residents should ask to see permits from transient sellers, hang up on unsolicited phone calls and shred junk mail.
