GARDINER, Maine — A large apartment fire is under investigation in Gardiner.
The fire started around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday at an apartment on Highland Avenue. There are 28 units in the building, but firefighters are not sure how many peopled lived there.
One tenant was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation, but everyone else made it out safely. The fire chief credits the quick work of his crews to make sure everyone was out of the building.
The apartment building does have extensive damage. There is no word yet on a cause, but the fire chief said he does not believe the fire is suspicious. An investigator with the state fire marshals office will be on the scene later this morning.
The American Red Cross is now assisting the displaced residents.
