THOMASTON, Maine — A 33-year-old Swanville man is being held without bail pending a court appearance Wednesday afternoon on charges that he assaulted a woman when she refused to give him money to buy marijuana.

Nathaniel B. Hussey remained at the Knox County Jail Wednesday morning on two counts of domestic violence assault and two counts of violating a protective order.

Hussey became agitated on Friday when the apartment the woman lives in ran out of heating oil and there was no money to buy more, according to affidavits filed by both the Thomaston Police Department and Knox County Sheriff’s Office. When the woman went out to buy Hussey cigarettes with change she had found, he threw the leg of a chair at her, striking her in the thigh, the police affidavits stated.

On Sunday, when the woman returned home from work, he demanded money from her to buy marijuana. She said they had little money and shouldn’t use it for that. He then pushed her and spit in her face. He also urinated on the floor, according to the affidavits.

The woman called police because she feared Hussey was going to severely beat her. When the first officer arrived, Hussey was found hiding under a pile of blankets on the bed. He was arrested late Sunday afternoon.

There was a protection order barring Hussey from having contact with the woman. He had a prior domestic violence assault conviction in July 2013 which elevates the new domestic violence assault charges to felony level offenses.
