WASHBURN, Maine — Police are asking for the public’s help in locating the operator of a snowmobile who allegedly struck and killed a dog while the owner was walking with it last weekend.
“The Washburn Police Department would appreciate any information anyone may have on a dog that was hit by a snowmobile and killed while walking with its owner on Riverside Drive on Sunday evening,” Chief Roy Guidry said via the department’s Facebook page.
The incident occurred about 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 22.
“The information we have is that the snowmobile was operated by a single individual and was going at a high rate of speed. The snowmobile was followed shortly by another snowmobile with two riders,” Guidry said.
Patrolman Luke Blackstone said Wednesday he was not sure what kind of a dog it was but thought it was a “terrier, a small dog.” It was not on a leash at the time.
He said the dog’s owner was walking home from her neighbor’s house when it happened. A snowmobile trail crosses the road in that area, Blackstone said.
Anyone with information is urged to call the police department at 455-4043.
