HOLDEN, Maine — Traffic on U.S. Route 1A returned to normal after it was disrupted for more than an hour during the busy evening commute Wednesday evening.

The crash happened about 5:30 p.m. at the intersection of Route 1A and Copeland Hill Road, Holden police Sgt. Eugene Fizell said Wednesday night.

Cheryl Roy, 59, of Holden was attempting to turn left from Copeland Hill Road onto Route 1A when she saw a vehicle approaching from her left with its directional light on, slowing and pulling into the breakdown lane as it prepared to turn onto Copeland Hill Road.

Roy said she did not see any vehicles immediately behind the turning vehicle, so she pulled her 2011 Ford pickup out onto Route 1A, Fizell said.

However, a 1997 Ford Ranger driven by Michael Harrington, 37, of Holden turned onto Copeland Hill Road. Harrington’s truck then was struck by Roy’s truck, Fizell said.

Both drivers were wearing their seat belts and neither was hurt, the sergeant said. Neither vehicle had passengers.

Traffic, which was heavy at the time, was slowed down for about an hour, Fizell said. Members of the Holden Fire Department and a Penobscot County sheriff’s deputy from Orrington assisted with traffic control.

No charges are expected as a result of the investigation, Fizell said.
