BEND, Oregon — Emily Ramsey of the University of Maine-Farmington placed third overall in the Female Freestyle Sprint at the 2015 United States Collegiate Ski and Snowboard Association National Championship on Wednesday afternoon at Mt. Bachelor.
St. Olaf’s Piper Bain (2 minutes, 46.9 seconds) and Nora Gilbertson finished first and second, respectively. Ramsey was four seconds behind the winner.
In the semifinal qualifier, Ramsey edged Sierry Jech by half a ski-length.
In the Men’s Freestyle Sprint qualifier, UMF’s Bryce Neal took 37th and Joshua Richards placed 44th.
The Beavers return to the course on Friday for the USCSA 15k Freestyle National Championship.
Jones named UMF softball coach
University of Maine-Farmington athletics director Julie Davis announced on Wednesday that Amy Jones will serve as the interim head softball coach.
Jones, a UMF graduate, takes her first collegiate coaching position after an outstanding career in the program. She became the first player in program history to earn All-North Atlantic Conference first- or second-team honors all four years.
Jones holds the school’s career record for at-bats with 378 and is second with 116 career starts and 97 runs scored. Her 15 home runs and 78 runs batted are No. 3 all time. Jones was a career .349 hitter.
Jones, a graduate of Cony High School in Augusta, earned a degree in community health education from UMF in 2014.
UMFK players honored
Joe McCloskey of the University of Maine-Fort Kent has been named to the United States Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division I Men’s Basketball All-America First Team.
The sophomore was among 10 student-athletes recognized from across the county. McCloskey averaged 19.7 points and 8.6 rebounds for the Bengals, who won 10 games to exceed their win total from the previous two seasons combined.
Senior Ericka Saucier and junior Sam Carapellucci of the UMFK women’s basketball team were recognized as USCAA All-America honorable mentions.
UMFK also placed junior Mauro Vici and sophomore Niko Vukosavocic on the USCAA All-Academic team.
