CALAIS, Maine — A local woman was hospitalized Tuesday after a vehicle she was riding in was struck by a tractor-trailer on Route 1, according to police.

Shirley Durante, 78, and her passenger, Celeste Dipiero, 71, both of Calais, were pulling out of a residence to head south on Route 1, known locally as River Road, but Durante’s vehicle pulled into the path of a tractor-trailer driven by Maynard Vining, 65, of Charlotte, Calais police Sgt. Matthew Vinson said.

Vining attempted to avoid Durante’s vehicle, but was unable to avoid a collision and struck the vehicle’s rear-passenger side, Vinson said.

The impact sent Durante’s vehicle spinning and careening into a snowbank on the opposite side of the road, Vining said.

Durante was not injured but Dipiero was transported by ambulance to Calais Regional Hospital for injuries not considered life-threatening, the sergeant said.

Route 1 was closed for about a half hour while crews worked at the scene. The 2000 Chrysler Durante was driving was totaled.
