The 51st season for the Bangor Municipal Golf Course will kick off at 8 a.m. Tuesday.
The Pine Hill Golf Club in Brewer and the Rocky Knoll Country Club in Orrington have just opened, while Va Jo Wa Golf Course in Island Falls will open its front 9 on Saturday.
Carts won’t be allowed on any of the four courses at this time because of the wet conditions.
Bangor Municipal’s 27-hole layout offers an 18-hole and a nine-hole course.
Rocky Knoll has an 18-hole course, but just the front nine is currently open.
The Pine Hill Golf Club is a nine-hole course.
Brian Enman, the golf pro at the Bangor Municipal Golf Course, said the course is in good shape.
“The greens are very good. But the course is wet. It’s going to be damp for a couple of days. We need a couple days of sun and wind,” said Enman, who advised golfers to dress for the wet conditions.
He is hoping drying weather will arrive soon so they can open the course up for golf carts.
The eighth hole will be a little different because more than 35 trees have been removed to enable the hole to get more sunlight, which should expedite the drying process.
It also will help eradicate the root problem as the roots have spilled out into the playing area, which has made the area difficult to mow.
Enman has worked at the golf course for 45 years and has been the club pro for 21 of those years.
The excitement of opening day never gets old, he said.
”I’m very much looking forward to it,” said Enman.
Hero’s Sports Grill in Bangor has taken over as the restaurant vendor, replacing Grill on the Green.
Hero’s has a three-year agreement with the city of Bangor, according to Enman.
The owners of Grill on the Green didn’t wish to extend their contract after the three years, Enman said.
Va Jo Wa is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year and will open for the season on Saturday with the front 9 in play for walkers only.
The course will welcome new club pro Dave Grant with a meet-and-greet session from 8-9 a.m., then invites members and guests to participate in the clean-up of the back 9 from 9 a.m. until noon.
Participants will then be treated to a free lunch at The Maine Slice, prior to the 1 p.m. start of an Opening Day 9-Hole Scramble.
Grant, a certified teaching professional, plans a Ladies Golf Clinic on Tuesdays at 10 a.m. and will offer Junior clinic on Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
He also will usher in the return of the golf range at the course.
