MOSCOW, Maine — A Bingham man was arrested on Sunday evening after allegedly threatening a woman with a machete, according to the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office.

The series of events leading to the arrest of Dwight Hart started around 6 p.m. when a woman whose property is posted with “no trespassing” signs observed a pickup truck pull into her yard off Canada Road, Chief Deputy James Ross said.

Ross said the woman and Hart did not know each other and she has never seen him before.

The woman went out to confront Hart when she observed him loading lawn chairs into the back of his truck, Ross said. An argument ensued after the woman told Hart to remove the chairs, upon which he picked up a machete and began swinging it at the woman.

The machete did not hit the woman but did strike a gardening hoe which the woman had picked up on her way outside several times, and the woman struck Hart back with the hoe’s handle, according to Ross.

The woman was able to get a description of Hart’s truck and his license number as he left, and Deputy Wilfred Dodge was able to locate the truck and place Hart under arrest, Ross said.

Hart was charged with criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon and criminal trespass.
