HARTLAND, Maine — Two men escaped injury Monday afternoon after a float plane flipped over on Great Moose Pond, according to the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office.
The pilot, Kenneth Comfort, 53, was attempting to land on the pond when the plane’s floats caught a wave and bounced the plane up in the air where it was hit by a wind gust, according to Chief Deputy James Ross. The impact caused the plane to flip upside down on the water.
Comfort and his passenger, Thad Rines, 27, were not injured, and people in camps along the shore witnessed the accident and were able to get the men safely to shore, according to Ross.
The weather conditions at the time of the accident were fair with strong, gusty winds, Ross said.
Comfort is an experienced pilot with approximately 20 years of flight time, the chief deputy said.
Hartland firefighters assisted sheriff’s deputies at the scene.
