ORONO, Maine — The University of Maine women’s basketball team is going to have a lot of holes to fill once the 2015-2016 senior class graduates next spring.
Coach Richard Barron has filled one of those spots with a Division I transfer.
Barron on Monday announced that 5-foot-10 guard Tanesha Sutton will attend UMaine starting in the fall.
Sutton, who played last season at Duquesne University, must sit out next season due to NCAA transfer rules and will become eligible for the 2016-2017 season.
“We are thrilled to add Tanesha to our program,” Barron said in a press release. “We recruited her very hard out of high school and we are very happy she has picked Maine.”
Sutton, who hails from Philadelphia, spent last season at Duquesne of the Atlantic 10 Conference. She saw action in 25 games. She averaged 1.1 points and 1.1 rebounds in 4.8 minutes per contest.
Sutton led Saints Neumann and Goretti High School to an undefeated regular season, a 29-1 overall record and Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association state runner-up finish as a senior. The three-year captain was a first-team All-Catholic selection in 2013 and 2014.
Sutton was named the MVP of the 2014 New Jersey vs. Philadelphia All-Star Game after recording 22 points, 10 rebounds and five assists.
“Tanesha is extremely athletic and will have an opportunity to make a big impact a year from now,” Barron said. “However, she will immediately make us better in practice and the year in residence will give her the chance to fully learn our system. This is a big signing for our program.”
Sutton’s participation is contingent upon admission to UMaine and compliance with all NCAA rules, including registration with the NCAA Clearinghouse.
