ROCKLAND, Maine — A 21-year-old South Thomaston man is being held on $5,000 cash bail after he broke down the door to his ex-girlfriend’s apartment on Wednesday morning in order to see his infant, police said.
Kurtis Bertrand was arrested by Rockland police and charged with aggravated criminal trespass, criminal mischief and criminal trespass. Assistant District Attorney Christopher Fernald requested bail for Bertrand be set at $5,000 cash, and Judge Beth Dobson agreed.
None of the occupants of the home were injured, although Bertrand was bloodied and bruised by a friend of the woman, police said.
According to a police affidavit filed in Knox County Unified Court, police received a call shortly after 3 a.m. Wednesday about a man trying to break into a Rankin Street apartment. When officers arrived at the home, they reportedly found that the door to the apartment had been broken, a woman was outside, and Bertrand was inside the home, holding an infant.
Officers asked Bertrand to put the baby back in the crib and he eventually agreed. Police then handcuffed Bertrand.
Bertrand told officers that he had been invited into the apartment and then was beaten up by the woman’s new boyfriend.
Bertrand was intoxicated, police said in the affidavit.
The woman told officers that this was the second time that Bertrand had tried to get in the apartment that night but that police were not called the first time.
