BELFAST, Maine — A Northport man has been sentenced to two weeks in jail after he pleaded guilty last week to charges including terrorizing a police officer.
Ira H. Bailey, 32, came to police attention on April 12, when officers were informed that he was refusing to leave a downtown bar. According to the report from Belfast police Officer Lewis Dyer, responding officers were told that Bailey had slapped a man in the face and that he called the man “a rat.” Bailey believed the victim had told the bartender that Bailey had snuck in a bottle of vodka in his sweatshirt.
When officers found Bailey, “he did admit to smacking the man in the face because he was a rat,” Dyer said in his report.
Dyer put Bailey in handcuffs while police reviewed security tape video to verify he did assault the other patron. After finding out he did, officers placed him under arrest, at which point Bailey became “very confrontational,” Dyer said.
“He punched the cage in the cruiser. He then started swearing and mouthing off to Sgt. Matt Cook,” Dyer said, adding that officers brought him to a hospital for evaluation.
At the hospital, Bailey threatened to rape and murder Cook, his wife and his family, Dyer said.
Ultimately, Bailey was charged with assault and terrorizing. In addition to the two weeks in Waldo County jail, he also was sentenced at Waldo County Court to pay a $300 fine.
