BANGOR — Students from technical education programs in Bangor-area high schools and colleges won the nation’s highest awards at the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference. Industry leaders representing more than 600 businesses, corporations, trade associations and unions recognized the students for demonstrating excellence in 100 hands-on occupational and leadership competitions, such as robotics, criminal justice, aviation maintenance and public speaking. All competitions were designed, run and judged by industry using industry standards.

These students were Skill Point Certificate recipients at the SkillsUSA Championships in  Louisville, Kentucky, recently:

  • Team A — Anthony Farley and Preston Miller of United Technologies Center in Bangor were awarded a Skill Point Certificate in digital cinema production.
  • Team A — Bradley Oakes, Robert Levasseur and Matthew Wagner of United Technologies Center were awarded a Skill Point Certificate in interactive application and game development.
  • Jacob Beaulier of Newburgh and a student at Eastern Maine Community College in Bangor, was awarded a Skill Point Certificate in Information technology services.
  • Dakota Clement of Hampden and a student at United Technologies Center was awarded the high school gold medal in first aid and CPR.

The SkillsUSA Work Force Ready System was developed as an extension of the SkillsUSA mission and supported by a grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. The system recognizes students for excellence in occupational training. It also assesses and documents the entry-level technical proficiency and cumulative experiences of candidates.
