GRAY, Maine — After a Saturday night break-in at the American Legion Post 86, members report that the post’s safe was cut into and about $15,000 was stolen.

An additional unknown amount of money was stolen from an ATM and a register was also broken into as well, post leaders said.

The American Legion National Commander was at the post for a fundraising event Saturday, which was attended by hundreds of legion members. Post 86 has nearly 800 members and many of them are furious.

A detective with the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office said an investigation is under way. The detective said he’s not sure whether it was one person or multiple people who committed the crime, but whoever it was “knew what they were doing.”

Investigators collected evidence from the American Legion post. They say the investigation is still in an early stage.
