Wiltshire wins rain-delayed WMSGA playoff

BRUNSWICK — Liz Wiltshire won the Women’s Maine State Golf Association Senior Championship on Friday, 10 days after the tournament started.

Wiltshire, Lori Frost and Micki Meggison each shot 82 back on Aug. 11 amid very wet conditions at the Brunswick Golf Club. That called for a sudden-death playoff, but the conditions became unplayable to it was decided the playoff would be held at a later date.

That turned out to be Friday, when the golfers returned to play under similar rainy conditions, with Wiltshire claiming the title on the first playoff hole.

Yale Bowl adding temporary lights for Harvard game

The Harvard-Yale football rivalry, which began in 1875, is adding lights this year for the first time.

The Yale Bowl will have temporary lighting banks this season for the 132nd playing of the rivalry known as ‘The Game.’ It will be the first time that lights were brought into the stadium for any Bulldogs sporting event.

The Yale-Harvard game was given a 2:30 p.m. Eastern start time on Nov. 21 as part of the Ivy League’s television contract with NBC Sports Group. NBC will handle the installation and coordination, according to Steve Conn, a spokesman with the Yale athletic department.

The Yale Bowl was the world’s largest athletic stadium when it opened in 1914, and the first football stadium with seating completely surrounding the field. Today it seats 61,446, down from its original capacity of more than 70,000. It has had temporary lighting for a few different non-sporting events, most recently during the university’s tricentennial in 2001.

Wild assistant coach arrested for DUI

Minnesota Wild assistant coach Darryl Sydor was arrested Thursday on suspicion of DUI and child endangerment.

“We are aware of the reports regarding Darryl Sydor. We are continuing to gather information and will have further comment at the appropriate time,” the NHL team said in a statement Friday.

Sydor failed field sobriety tests and was taken to the Fridley (Minn.) Police Department where a test reportedly revealed he had a blood alcohol level of 0.30.

Sydor, 43, was driving his 12-year-old son to his hockey game, according to the Fridley Police.

Lt. Mike Monsrud of the Fridley Police Department said Sydor was observed displaying “erratic behavior” such as swerving and making wide turns. Monsrud said when stopped, police noticed Sydor had bloodshot, watery eyes and “slow, slurred speech,” according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.

Redskins QB Griffin suffers concussion

Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III suffered a concussion in Thursday night’s preseason game and the timetable for his return was unknown.

Griffin, under constant pressure by the Detroit Lions’ defense after almost every pass play, left the game in the second quarter of the Redskins’ 21-17 victory. He suffered a stinger in his shoulder as well, but apparently that injury was not a concern.

“We’ll have to see,” head coach Jay Gruden said after the win when asked how much time Griffin would miss and whether he would be available next Saturday night for the third preseason game against the Baltimore Ravens.

Vegas, Quebec closer to landing NHL teams

Both Las Vegas and Quebec City reportedly entered Phase III of the NHL’s expansion process Friday.

NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly confirmed to Yahoo! Sports that both cities had moved forward, while Quebecor, the group bidding for expansion in Quebec, announced the move on Twitter.

“Just the next phase of due diligence and document submission,” Daly told Yahoo via email.

In this phase, the markets will provide the NHL with additional information, including business plans, information about their respective cities’ demographics and arenas.

The NHL announced it would explore expansion with Las Vegas, Quebec City and Seattle at the league’s awards in late June, with the former two meeting the requirement of submitting applications by the deadline.

It is possible the NHL could award expansion franchises in September, although the new team or teams aren’t expected to start playing until the 2017-18 season.
