Former St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Joaquin Andujar died Tuesday in the Dominican Republic at age 62 after an extended battle with diabetes.

Andujar was to be honored in his hometown of San Pedro de Macoris on Tuesday and buried Wednesday.

The right-hander finished his major league career with a 127-118 record and a 3.58 ERA with the Cardinals, Houston Astros and Oakland Athletics. He was named to the All-Star team four times in 13 seasons and helped the Cardinals win the 1982 World Series, posting a 2-0 record against the Milwaukee Brewers in the Fall Classic, including a victory in Game 7.

Giants, Pierre-Paul talks reportedly break off

New York Giants officials met with defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul on Tuesday, but the discussions apparently broke down because the sides could not agree on Pierre-Paul’s readiness to play, ESPN.com reported.

Pierre-Paul left without signing his one-year, $14.8 million franchise tender. That number counts on the Giants’ salary cap even though Pierre-Paul is not playing at the moment.

It is unclear what the next step will be.

Pierre-Paul sustained injuries to his right hand in a July 4 fireworks accident. The most significant damage was done to his index finger, which had to be amputated.

He underwent a physical exam performed by team doctors on Monday, then he met with team officials on Tuesday so they could evaluate his playing status and decide how to proceed.

Pierre-Paul’s agents insist he could be ready to play before late October.

Former Iowa player Sash dies

Former Iowa and New York Giants safety Tyler Sash was found dead at his home Tuesday.

Sash, 27, played for head coach Kirk Ferentz at Iowa from 2008 to 2010 and was a member of the 2011 and 2012 New York Giants. He was drafted in the sixth round in 2011 and won a Super Bowl with the Giants.

The cause of death was not immediately confirmed by authorities. An autopsy is planned for Wednesday. The Iowa state medical examiner is investigating.

Ferentz, a former University of Maine head football coach, canceled his scheduled press conference Tuesday in Iowa City.

Suns’ Morris fined for trade demand

Phoenix Suns forward Markieff Morris was fined $10,000 by the NBA on Tuesday for what was called a public statement detrimental to the league.

The NBA acknowledged that the offending statement concerned Morris expressing a desire to be traded by the Suns.

Morris said on Twitter last week that “my future will not be in Phoenix.” He is upset that twin brother Marcus was traded to the Detroit Pistons during the summer after the two had signed contracts with the Suns for what was considered less than market value to ensure they could play together.

Morris has spent the past four seasons with the Suns and has career averages of 11.4 points and 5.4 rebounds per game.
