WATERVILLE, Maine — A 19-year-old man surrendered to police after flipping a vehicle at the end of a short but dangerous pursuit Wednesday evening, according to police.
Shortly before 5:50 p.m., Waterville police Officer Kyle McDonald reportedly noticed expired registration tags on a 2002 Ford Focus on Main Street near Elm Plaza. When McDonald tried to stop the vehicle, driver Dylan Caruso allegedly sped off.
Caruso drove onto Interstate 95, hitting speeds of about 100 mph, Waterville police Sgt. Alden Weigelt said Wednesday night.
Maine State Police Trooper Jesse Duda joined the pursuit on I-95. Other state and Waterville police were called to join, but the chase ended before they got there, Weigelt said.
Caruso reportedly attempted to get off I-95 at the Clinton exit, but lost control and crashed on Hinckley Road. The Focus slammed into a ditch and rolled over. The chase was over in about five minutes.
Weigelt said Caruso didn’t suffer any significant injuries and didn’t want to be taken to the hospital.
“We transported him ourselves out of caution,” Weigelt said.
As of Wednesday night, Caruso faces a dozen charges including eluding a police officer, driving to endanger, operating without a license and two counts of unlawful possession of scheduled drugs. He also was wanted on two warrants and faces civil charges including possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, attaching false plates and operating a defective motor vehicle.
More charges could be coming, Weigelt said, adding that police are still investigating and trying to determine whether Caruso owns the vehicle he crashed.
