BATH, Maine — Three residents and a dog safely escaped a Bath home early Monday morning after a fire crawled up the rear walls from a deck and ignited the attic.
Bath Fire Chief Larry Renaud said Monday morning that an investigation conducted with investigators from the state fire marshal’s office concluded the cause of the fire was discarded smoking materials, which ignited with the assistance of wind off the Kennebec River.
Firefighters were called at 1:43 a.m. to 11 Graffam Way, off High Street, and upon arrival found smoke and fire in the attic of the home, Renaud said.
The residents, alerted by smoke detectors, were out of the house with a dog when firefighters arrived.
“Smoke detectors definitely saved lives last night,” Renaud said.
Crews knocked down the flames in about 20 minutes, he said. Firefighters spent another 90 minutes on overhaul and cleanup.
The structure is intact, according to Renaud, but will require roof repairs and rebuilding. The homeowners did have insurance, he said.
Brunswick and West Bath firefighters assisted at the scene.
