WESTBROOK, Maine — Dozens gathered in Westbrook to show support for the Arab American community Monday, after multiple notes surfaced calling all Muslims terrorists.
The notes were left on cars in the area last week.
The city’s mayor and police chief both attended the Unity for a Stronger Community event.
Organizers from the New England Arab American Organization said the goal of the event was to show that Westbook is a safe place for everyone, including Muslims.
“We’re here to let the Muslim community see that they have a lot of support and this is a community that’s looking out for their safety. We’re all one. And don’t let one incident ruin the feeling of safety that we had before,” said Zoe Sahloul, New England Arab American Organization.
The mayor of Westbrook wanted to remind newcomers to the country that there are plenty of resources, like interpreters at the city’s community center.
