Center Bryan Stork failed his physical with the Washington Redskins that will nullify the trade made last week with the New England Patriots.

Stork was traded to the Redskins on Wednesday after reports initially emerged that he had been cut by the Patriots. The Redskins had agreed to send a conditional seventh-round pick to the Patriots in exchange for Stork.

“Yeah, it’s disappointing,” Washington coach Jay Gruden said of Stork’s failed physical. “I’m sure he’s disappointed. We’re disappointed, but it happens every year. When people get traded or picked up they have to pass physicals and every physical is different. Until all that gets taken care of — they report, they pass a physical — as a coach, there’s really not a lot you can do until they actually get into the pads and into practice. It’s unfortunate.

“He’s a great kid and obviously a very good player, and hopefully. … Every physical is different on every team, so it might be different somewhere else, but it didn’t work out here.”

Stork started 17 regular-season games over the previous two seasons with the Patriots, but the 2014 fourth-round pick has sustained four documented concussions dating to his college career at Florida State and was not expected to win back his starting job in New England.

Stork was the Patriots’ starting center for their win at Super Bowl XLIX.

Injuries played a part in Stork’s departure from New England but temperament might have played a role, too.

Stork was tossed out of a joint practice with the Chicago Bears two weeks ago, got the boot from Patriots coach Bill Belichick during a minicamp practice in June and drew a costly penalty for a head butt in the AFC Championship game against the Denver Broncos.
