BANGOR, Maine — A Bangor woman pleaded guilty to unlawfully entering the United States without presenting herself at a border crossing point during a Tuesday hearing in U.S. District Court.

Deidre Smith, also known as Deidre Fowler, is unemployed and is a dual citizen of the United States and Canada, according to the U.S. attorney’s office.

According to court records, U.S. Border Patrol agents saw Smith, 43, walking on Lincoln Road in Hodgdon near the border between Canada and the United States on Aug. 5.

Footage of her walk was captured by a surveillance camera. An agent who was sent to the area spoke with Smith and determined she had outstanding state warrants for failing to pay fines. The agent arrested her on the warrants.

Smith later admitted she crossed into the United States on foot from Canada and that she knowingly failed to enter the United States through a border crossing point. She said she entered the country to see her children in Bangor.

Smith faces up to one year in prison, a fine of up to $5,000 and up to one year of supervised release. She will be sentenced after the completion of a presentence investigation report by the U.S. Probation Office.

The investigation was conducted by the U.S. Border Patrol.
