ORONO, Maine — The University of Maine Black Bears scored five second-half goals to snap a 2-2 tie and earn a 7-3 victory over Dartmouth Monday at the UM field hockey complex.

It marks the first time under 10-year head coach Josette Babineau that the Black Bears have started the season 4-0. Dartmouth falls to 0-2.

Madison Cummings sparked the Black Bears with three goals while Casey Crowley chipped in with a goal and four assists.

Cummings started the five-goal outburst for the Black Bears, five minutes into the half off of an assist from Crowley on a give and go as Maine regained the lead 3-2. Eleven minutes later, Adrianna Martineau notched her first goal of the season as Maine increased its lead 4-2.

Maine received a penalty corner seven minutes later and Crowley scored its fifth goal of the day.

Five minutes later, the Black Bears had a three-on-one opportunity as Crowley passed to her left to set up Cummings for her third goal as she increased the margin to 6-2. Lydia Gavner added Maine’s seventh goal off of a Crowley assist.

Dartmouth’s Joanne Nazareth scored its third goal of the game in the final minutes.

Emily Corbett started in goal for the Black Bears, while Emma Plumb started for the Big Green.

For the fourth game this season, Maine opened with the first goal of the game from Ella Mosky off of a pass from Crowley. Ten minutes later, Cummings scored her first goal.

One minute later, Dartmouth’s Heather Zezzo scored to cut Maine’s lead in half, 2-1. Eleven minutes later, Dartmouth tied the game 2-2 off of a penalty corner with Joanne Nazareth scoring her first of the season.

Maine outshot Dartmouth 12-3 in the first half.

Emma Cochran made one first-half save for the Bears and Emily Corbett had two in the second half.

Dartmouth’s Emma Plumb finished with nine saves and Hailey Valerio came on to play the final 19 minutes, making one save.

The Bears visit Boston University at 4 p.m. Friday.
