ORONO, Maine — A stolen handgun that was discovered after a minor traffic violation led to felony charges against three men, one from Maine and two from New York, Orono police Chief Josh Ewing said Thursday.

Officer Sarah Angelo stopped a vehicle on Water Street operating without headlights just before 1 a.m. on Sunday.

Angelo “smelled marijuana, so she searched the occupants and the vehicle,” Ewing said in an email. “Under the front seat [she] found 2 firearms, one of which had been reported stolen. All occupants were interviewed, then arrested and charged with receiving stolen property (Class B felony).”

The firearm, a .357-caliber revolver, was reported stolen from a residence in Penobscot County, the police chief said.

Christopher Scott, 20, Jordan Duncan, 19, both of Spring Valley, New York, and Ahkim Santana, 19, of Veazie, all face a penalty of up to 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine, if convicted of felony receiving stolen property.

All three were booked into Penobscot County Jail in Bangor, and later released on bail, a jail official said.
