ORONO, Maine — More than 2,100 Emera Maine customers in seven towns lost power on Monday after a vehicle took out a utility pole on Main Street, officials said.

Customers in Alton, Argyle, Glenburn, Hudson, Old Town, Orono and Stillwater still had power out at 3:30 p.m., about two hours after the crash across the street from the fire station at 63 Main St. Transformer damage likely contributed to the outage, Emera spokesman Bob Potts said.

“It takes time to detach wires, set a new pole, and replace those wires,” Potts said Tuesday afternoon.

A 74-year-old man drove a Subaru Outback into the pole at about 1:25 p.m. He suffered minor injuries because an airbag deployed and he was wearing a seatbelt. The man said he was evading another vehicle when the collision occurred, Orono police Sgt. Dan Merrill said.

Emera hoped to restore power to the customers by 5 p.m., Potts said.

Orono police ask accident witnesses to call Officer Chris Gray at 866-4000.
