OLD TOWN, Maine — The fourth annual Courageous Steps Walk-Run will be held Sunday, May 21, at Victory Field with proceeds to benefit area programs that strive to help children and young adults with developmental challenges.
This year’s event is being dedicated to the late Dylan McInnis of Old Town, a hockey-loving youngster who learned to live with autism before dying at age 14 in May 2016 due to a congenital heart defect.
The Courageous Steps one-mile walk will take place at approximately noon, followed at 12:45 p.m. by the mile run.
The following pre-registration options are available: children age 10 and younger, $6; 11 and older, $12; families, $25 and 10-person teams, $100 with an additional $10 for each added person.
Event-day registration is $8 per child 10 and younger, $12 for person 11 and older, $30 per family, and $100 per team.
Other activities surrounding the walk-run will include volleyball, badminton, bean bag toss and arts and crafts. The Darling’s Ice Cream for A Cause truck will also be at the site from noon to 2 p.m.
The Courageous Steps Project is a nonprofit organization created by 19-year-old Connor Archer, a 2016 graduate of Old Town High School who now is a first-year student at Husson University in Bangor.
Archer, who at 3 was diagnosed with autism, had a highly successful high school career as a student-athlete and has dedicated himself to supporting causes like those that have helped him through the years by raising funds for adaptive equipment and other educational needs.
Archer was active earlier this spring in organizing a season-ending play day for six of the Bangor area’s high school unified basketball teams.
Those you cannot make it to the walk-run but still wish to contribute to the cause, can mail a donation to: The Courageous Steps Project, c/o Connor Archer, P.O. Box 1, Stillwater, ME 04489. Checks may be made payable to: Courageous Steps with “walk-run 2017” in the memo.
