The husband and wife arrested in the Memorial Day weekend robberies of a Bangor bank and Dollar Tree have pleaded guilty to federal charges.
Seth J. Blewitt pleaded guilty on Thursday to bank robbery, interference with commerce by robbery and using a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence. Cara M. Blewitt pleaded guilty on Oct. 11 to aiding and abetting a bank robbery and interference with commerce by robbery.
The Blewitts, both 30 and of Oakville, Connecticut, have been held without bail since their arrests by Bangor police on May 29.
By pleading guilty, both Blewitts admitted that their short-lived crime spree began about 12:40 p.m. Sunday, May 28, when Seth Blewitt robbed TD Bank on Stillwater Avenue of about $500 while his wife waited in their gray Volvo station wagon in the Wal-Mart parking lot nearby.
The Blewitts described themselves to Bangor police as heroin users who spent at least some of the stolen money on drugs. Cara Blewitt said they targeted a TD Bank because she’d worked as a manager at a branch in Connecticut and was aware of their policies and procedures regarding robberies, Bangor police said.
The next day, Seth Blewitt walked into the Dollar Tree on Stillwater Avenue about 4 p.m. with a 12-gauge shotgun, according to the court documents. He left the store with $400 from the register and got into the Volvo driven by his wife.
Bangor police stopped the car about 30 minutes later at Third and Union streets on the other side of Bangor, court documents said. Cara Blewitt was driving and Seth Blewitt was in the passenger seat.
Information about how much of the robbery money was recovered has not been released.
Cara faces up to 20 years in federal prison and fines of up to $250,000 for each robbery. Seth Blewitt faces between seven years and life in prison for his crimes, according to the U.S. attorney’s office. Sentencing dates have not been set.
