Who is paying for all these expensive ads urging Mainers to vote “no” on Question 3? And why is it worth so much to them? Follow the money!
The costly ads are being paid for by investors like ENMAX, a private corporation whose sole shareholder is the city of Calgary (Canada). Calgary’s City Council acts in the capacity of shareholder on behalf of the residents of Calgary.
That means our electric grid is going to be controlled by politicians whether Question 3 passes or not. The difference is that if it passes, they will be Maine politicians, and Mainers will have the power to vote them out of office if they do a lousy job. What would we do if our grid was controlled by foreign politicians and they do a lousy job?
And make no mistake about rate increases! To foreign corporations, it appears our electric grid is an investment: a cash cow for their stockholders. To Maine, the grid would be a public utility. It would belong to the people of Maine and exist for the sole purpose of serving the public interest.
