Orono High School quarterback Jack Brewer, who completed 71 percent of his passes and threw 35 touchdown passes, is one of 13 semifinalists for the Fitzpatrick Trophy which is awarded annually to the state’s best senior football player.
Players are judged on their on-field performance (70 percent), their academic record (30 percent) and other criteria including sportsmanship, citizenship and school and community involvement.
High school coaches and media members will whittle the field down to four finalists and the winner will be announced at the awards ceremony on Jan. 19 at the Holiday Inn by the Bay in Portland.
Brewer completed 164 of 231 passes for 2,621 yards in Eight-Man football. He was intercepted just five times. He averaged 291.2 passing yards per game.
He threw 18 two-point conversion passes. He also ran the ball 22 times for 70 yards.
Brewer concluded his career throwing for 9,206 yards and 125 touchdowns while being intercepted just 30 times. He completed 566 of 921 passes for a 61 percent completion rate.
He was also a defensive back and has a 99 grade average in the classroom.
Brewer was one of six quarterbacks chosen as finalists. There were also four running backs and three wide receivers.
The other quarterbacks are Wyatt Benoit of Saco’s Thornton Academy, Easton Healy of South Portland, Tavian Lauture of Portland’s Deering High School, Jamier Rose of Noble High School in North Berwick and Louis Thurston of Portland High.
The running backs are Kaiden Delano from Oak Hill High School in Wales, Dash Farrell from Mt. Ararat High School in Topsham, Eli Potter from Wells High School and Brady Stone from Kennebunk.
The wide receivers are Colby Cooper from Bonny Eagle High in Buxton, Jack Karlonas from Gorham High and Riley Provencher from Old Orchard Beach.
Benoit threw for 1,270 yards and rushed for 944 more; Healy completed 57.3 percent of his passes for 1,073 yards and ran for 537 more while also being involved in 60 tackles as a safety; Lauture ran for 934 yards, passed for 825 and had five interceptions on the defensive side; Rose completed 62.1 percent of his throws for 1,518 yards and ran for 938 and Thurston completed 63 percent of his passes for 1,465 yards and rushed for a team-high 1,027 yards. He also had three interceptions.
Delano rushed for 1,576 yards and had 92 tackles; Farrell ran for 1,446 yards, had 773 return yards and 308 receiving yards and had 73 tackles; Potter rushed for 1,400 yards and had 52 tackles and Stone had over 1,200 rushing yards and made 49 tackles.
Cooper caught a school-record 38 passes for 430 yards and averaged five tackles per contest; Karlonas was involved in 97 tackles and caught 28 passes for 515 yards and Provencher hauled in 40 passes for 1,121 yards and carried the ball 13 times for 120 yards. He also returned three kicks for TDs.
