Camp Susan Curtis is celebrating a milestone this summer as Evening with Maine Authors returns for its 10th year on Friday, Aug. 7 at Stone Mountain Arts Center in Brownfield. The beloved annual event has become a tradition for book lovers across Maine while raising critical support for the only camp in the state that exclusively serves children from low-income households at no cost to their families.
This year’s featured authors, Lewis Robinson and Sarah Braunstein, will share readings from their work and discuss their writing during an evening that celebrates Maine’s literary community while helping ensure more children have access to the life-changing experience of camp.
Robinson is the author of “Officer Friendly and Other Stories”, “The Islanders” and “Water Dogs”. His work has received national recognition, including a Whiting Award, a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship and the PEN Oakland/Josephine Miles Award. He teaches creative writing at the University of Maine at Farmington.
Braunstein is the author of “The Sweet Relief of Missing Children” and “Bad Animals”, with a new collection “Baby in a Box” forthcoming. Her writing has appeared in The New Yorker, The Best American Short Stories, Ploughshares and numerous other publications. She is a recipient of the National Book Foundation’s prestigious “5 Under 35” honor and teaches at Colby College.
The evening begins at 5 p.m. with a cocktail hour in the Queen Post Barn, followed by a sumptuous buffet dinner in the Maine Hall. Guests will enjoy readings from both authors, opportunities for book signings and hear firsthand from a Camp Susan Curtis alum whose story illustrates the lasting impact camp can have on a child’s future.
Since 1974, Camp Susan Curtis has served roughly 20,000 Maine children. Today, it is the only camp in Maine that exclusively serves children from low-income households through a free, 10-day overnight summer camp experience. This summer alone, Camp Susan Curtis welcomed 455 campers, a 15% increase from the previous year, reflecting the growing need for programs that provide children with opportunities to connect with nature, build confidence and discover their full potential.
